Saturday Night Live’s Humorous Nod to Superman II
This past weekend, Saturday Night Live brought a delightful parody of Richard Donner’s 1980 classic, Superman II, featuring John Mulaney stepping into the iconic role of Superman and Sarah Sherman portraying Lois Lane. Donner’s version of Superman redefined the superhero genre by presenting a charismatic yet approachable hero, setting the stage for future comic book adaptations. Nearly five decades later, Christopher Reeve continues to be celebrated as the quintessential Superman.
Tributes and Anticipation
Just before James Gunn’s upcoming Superman movie is set to debut, and shortly after the release of the DC Studios documentary Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story, SNL decided to share a “Cut for Time”sketch that humorously explores themes from Donner’s original film. The sketch features Mulaney’s Superman alongside Sherman’s Lois Lane as they attempt to share a tender moment. However, they are humorously disrupted by Lois’ overly inquisitive roommate, Glenn Bechamel.
Sketch Highlights
In a twist of comedy, Glenn insists on testing Superman’s powers, creating an awkward yet funny scenario. The arrival of General Zod adds to the chaos when Glenn comically scares him away using her bizarre remarks. This playful take showcases SNL’s knack for blending nostalgia with humor, capturing the spirit of what made the original Superman films so beloved.
