Warning! This article contains SPOILERS for Landman season 1, episode 9. Recent developments in Landman have left audiences on edge, particularly concerning Monty Miller’s (played by Jon Hamm) health. By the end of episode 9, Monty’s heart troubles escalated dramatically, culminating in a potentially fatal situation. As his heart rate surged and he exhibited severe discomfort, fans were left wondering if this is the end for Monty. While losing Jon Hamm would be a significant blow to the series, this twist could also pave the way for Demi Moore’s character, Cami, to step into a more prominent role.
To date, the plot of Landman has largely revolved around the struggles of the Norris family and particularly Tommy (Billy Bob Thornton) in his professional life as an oil landman. Monty’s recent promotion of Tommy to Vice President of Operations at M-Tex adds layers to the corporate dynamics within the show. If Monty were to exit the narrative, this shift would enable a deeper exploration of the intricacies of the oil industry, providing a much-needed context for Cami to showcase her own strengths and character dimensions.
How Landman Has Underutilized Demi Moore’s Cami
Cami’s Limited Presence and Impact in Landman
As season 1 approaches its finale, the show has unfortunately fallen short in utilizing Demi Moore’s talents. In the first nine episodes, Cami seemed less like a character and more like a decorative backdrop. While the recent episodes saw her express concern over Monty’s health, they still failed to provide her the opportunity to process the potential loss adequately. In fact, there’s an episode where Cami has no lines at all, merely appearing in the background while preparing a smoothie.
Even though not every character can dominate the storyline, Cami’s underdevelopment raises eyebrows, particularly given Moore’s impressive credentials as a Golden Globe-winning actress. Her character could have taken on a more dynamic role, such as a formidable attorney or a nurturing presence, but instead, she mostly remains in the shadows, contributing little to the overall narrative.
Monty’s Potential Death and its Implications for Demi Moore
A Chance for Cami to Shine Through Grief
Should Monty indeed succumb to his health issues, it presents an opportunity for Demi Moore to deliver the powerful emotional performance that has thus far been missing from her character. Cami’s potential grief at Monty’s funeral or during poignant interactions with Tommy could showcase Moore’s range and expertise. Even if Monty survives, his health crisis could catalyze significant character development for Cami, allowing her to step into a more assertive role, perhaps even pushing Monty towards retirement.
Could Monty’s Death Open Doors for Cami in Landman?
A Shift in Leadership at M-Tex?
There’s also a possibility that Monty’s exit could lead to Cami taking a more central role in M-Tex as the series progresses into season 2. With Monty out of the equation, the company’s future might pivot towards Cami, allowing her to take over the reins and putting her in a position that better utilizes Moore’s talents. This potential shift could address the earlier shortcomings in how Cami has been portrayed throughout the initial season.

While the prospect of Cami taking a more significant role is enticing, it remains uncertain how the narrative will unfold. Cami might opt to allow Tommy to lead the company rather than stepping into a leadership role herself, particularly as she faces the challenges of single-parenthood. It is plausible that Tommy and Rebecca will take the helm at M-Tex in season 2, relegating Cami back to the periphery. Yet, the possibility of Monty’s potential death does offer Moore a fleeting chance to leave her mark on this season.
