On Friday, September 13, Quindarrius Zachary, known in the music world as Lil D, was apprehended by officers from the Atlanta Police to secure his testimony in the ongoing trial of the prominent rapper Young Thug. Lil D has been identified as a crucial figure in the legal proceedings, with his name being frequently referenced during the trial.
Attorney Daniel Scheib filed a request for his client’s release in Fulton County Court on Monday, September 16, amidst Young Thug’s trial. In his statement to the court, Scheib articulated:
“He’s suffering severely from sickle cell disease. When he was transported from the hospital, he underwent two blood transfusions. He will not survive, your honor.”
Judge Paige Reese Whitaker responded by clarifying that Zachary had already been released from police custody and was currently receiving medical treatment at Grady Memorial Hospital.
Lil D’s Battle with Sickle Cell Disease
In a session at Fulton County Court, it was disclosed that Quindarrius “Lil D”Zachary suffers from sickle cell disease. The Cleveland Clinic defines sickle cell disease as a genetic blood disorder that disrupts the normal structure of hemoglobin, a vital protein in red blood cells (RBCs).
This abnormal hemoglobin causes red blood cells to assume a crescent-like shape, leading to a loss of flexibility and potential blockages in blood flow. Consequently, the condition often results in anemia due to the reduced lifespan of these deformed RBCs.
Reports from Yahoo! News indicate that Lil D was arrested shortly after being discharged from the hospital on Friday. The following day, on Saturday, September 14, a GoFundMe page was initiated to advocate for his fair treatment and release from incarceration.
Judge Reese noted that Zachary was admitted to Grady Hospital on Monday morning, but Scheib informed that he had spoken to Zachary’s family at 2 A.M. and Lil D was still in jail at that point, indicating that his transfer to the hospital occurred between the early morning hours and the court hearing.
As Zachary continues to undergo treatment, it remains uncertain whether he will be able to provide testimony in the courtroom soon. His arrest coincided with significant developments in the case, including statements from Antonio Sledge (also known as Mounk Tonuk), who is a vital witness in the trial. Derreck Wright, Sledge’s attorney for 15 years, also faced questioning.
Sledge, who previously served as the head of security for Young Thug’s YSL, purportedly confessed that three or four group members were allegedly engaged in criminal activities “to enhance the group’s notoriety and street credibility,”according to court documents.
When interrogated about his past statements regarding the drive-by shooting on April 28, 2015, Sledge infamously responded with, “I don’t recall,”a phrase that has become frequently echoed throughout the trial.
Previously, Sledge has admitted guilt to charges related to conspiracy to violate RICO laws and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
Lil D Among Numerous Witnesses in Young Thug Trial
While the timeline for Zachary’s testimony in the ongoing YSL trial remains uncertain, it is evident that he is one of the many witnesses the prosecution anticipates will testify.
Younger Thug, whose real name is Jeffery Lamar Williams, was arrested in Atlanta on May 9, 2022, on RICO-related charges, facing a 56-count indictment.
Following his arrest, a raid of Young Thug’s residence resulted in an additional seven felony charges. The trial commenced on November 27, 2022, in Fulton County Court, about six months after his arrest.
With an extensive list of potential witnesses yet to be called, the duration of witness testimony in this trial is expected to set new records in Atlanta, as reported by Atlanta News First.
