Main Insights
- Megumi was positioned as a formidable character but ultimately fell short of expectations, rendering him overrated.
- Hanami, a Disaster Curse, did not fulfill its potential despite being among the series’ most formidable entities.
- Characters like Ryu, known for their high energy output, struggled in battles against opponents, thus appearing overrated within the narrative.
The quest for strength is a pivotal theme in the Jujutsu Kaisen narrative. This core premise significantly influences the arcs of Gojo and Sukuna, both beloved characters who have claimed the title of the strongest sorcerers in their time. Their immense power serves as a backdrop for conflicts that question whether isolation or the support of others is the superior path.
While strength undeniably drives character arcs, the Jujutsu Kaisen storyline has introduced figures initially portrayed as immensely powerful, only for them to ultimately not justify their positions within the established power dynamics. This observation doesn’t imply that these characters lack strength; rather, their abilities don’t match those of the series’ most potent figures. Let’s delve into these characters.
Megumi’s Unfulfilled Potential
Intended as the Mightiest Character

From his initial introduction in the story, Megumi was depicted as a character shrouded in mystery regarding his full strength, particularly pointing to his unique Cursed Technique. As the plot developed, various hints suggested his extraordinary potential, including a flashback revealing that a past user of his Cursed Technique was able to defeat a member of the Gojo clan, who possessed both Limitless and the Six Eyes Techniques. This memory alone showcased the might Megumi could wield when operating at his peak.
Winning by dying is very different from simply winning, Megumi.
Nevertheless, despite the buildup surrounding Megumi as a rival to Gojo, the plot has yet to reveal his full potential. After being absent for a considerable time due to Sukuna usurping his body, Megumi’s character development stagnated, preventing him from mastering Mahoraga, a testament to his true strength. Consequently, he stands out as one of the more overrated characters in the narrative. The series revealed glimpses of his potential power during Sukuna’s takeover, which was sufficient to defeat Gojo.
Hanami’s Underwhelming Presence
Hanami Fell Short Compared to Peers

As one of the strongest Cursed Spirits of its time, Hanami represents a manifestation of the fears and misgivings that humanity holds toward nature. With its robust Cursed Technique, it could conjure massive plants and roots, inflicting severe damage on adversaries as demonstrated in the Kyoto Goodwill Event where it wreaked havoc on Jujutsu High.
Upon rebirth, we shall emerge transformed. Still, I eagerly await our reunion.
Despite possessing such significant capabilities, Hanami ultimately fell short in its execution. Although it proved to be a fierce opponent during the event, Todo and Yuji were able to subdue it despite not being at full strength, forcing Hanami to attempt using its Domain, which also backfired. At the beginning of the Shibuya Incident, Gojo defeated this Disaster Curse with little effort, merely increasing the output of his Infinity.
Ryu’s Impressive Energy Output
Lacked Victories Against Foes
First Appearance |
Jujutsu Kaisen, Chapter 172, “Tokyo No. 1 Colony, Part 13” |
---|---|
Debut Date |
January 31, 2022 |
Ryu Ishigori, a sorcerer with ancient origins from 400 years prior, re-emerged during the Culling Game. His formidable reputation comes from being described as the sorcerer with the highest Cursed Energy output during the event, showcasing this through an incredibly potent and destructive energy wave, reminiscent of something from Dragon Ball.
He’s a celebrity who flaunts having the highest Cursed Energy output among all participants.
However, Ryu’s stature is deemed overrated due to his performance against strong adversaries in the series. Though he found himself evenly matched with two other powerful sorcerers, Ryu was ultimately defeated by Yuta, despite putting up a good fight. His encounter with Sukuna concluded abruptly, with the King of Curses dispatching Ryu with ease before a response was possible.
Suguru Geto: The Possibly Weaker Special Grade
Potentially the Least Powerful Special Grade Sorcerer
First Appearance |
Jujutsu Kaisen, Chapter 0-2, “Blacker and Blacker” |
---|---|
Debut Date |
May 26, 2017 |
Suguru Geto became a beloved figure during the Hidden Inventory arc, showcasing his journey toward villainy. Prior to this transformation, he stood as one of the strongest sorcerers alongside Gojo, easily dispatching anyone weaker than him and championing Gojo’s philosophy that the strongest protect the vulnerable, only to be thrown into chaos by Toji’s arrival, altering his path.
At the very least, you should admonish me in the end.
After being outclassed by Toji and subsequently overshadowed by Gojo’s ascension, Geto turned to villainy. During the events of Jujutsu Kaisen 0, he faced off against Yuta, another Special Grade sorcerer, who, while still developing his skills, ultimately overcame Geto, leading to Geto’s demise at the hands of Gojo. While undeniably powerful, Geto consistently faltered against others on his level.
Kashimo: The Most Overrated Character
Kashimo Lacked Competitiveness Against Top Characters
First Appearance |
Jujutsu Kaisen, Chapter 158, “Kogane” |
---|---|
Debut Date |
September 13, 2021 |
Hajime Kashimo, frequently cited by fans as the series’ most overrated character, was heralded as the strongest sorcerer of the Edo Period. Introduced during the Culling Game arc, Kashimo was built up as potentially the mightiest of his era, comparable to Sukuna and Gojo, and fans anticipated his abilities would align with theirs, given he was one of the few to survive confrontations against powerful opponents.
Crank up the volume; it’s essentially a eulogy for the living!
Unfortunately, Kashimo could not match the expectations set for him. Although he delivered one of the most engaging fights in Jujutsu Kaisen against Hakari, he ultimately lost, primarily due to his failure to wield his Cursed Technique (which is a single-use move). This already indicated that he likely wasn’t on the same tier as Sukuna and Gojo. Despite retaining some hope for his abilities upon utilizing his technique, his activation of Mythical Beast Amber merely enhanced his speed and strength, making it easy for Sukuna to eliminate him swiftly, affirming Kashimo’s status as the most overrated character in the franchise.
Jujutsu Kaisen is available for streaming on Amazon Prime and Netflix.
