Jurassic Park enthusiasts will notice a significant absence in the cast of the forthcoming film Jurassic World Rebirth. Jeff Goldblum recently discussed his character’s omission from the franchise, hinting that his story may have reached a conclusion.
The announcement for Jurassic World Rebirth came in early 2024, with filming wrapped up by September 2024, allowing ample time for post-production, particularly for the visual effects highlighting the dinosaurs. The film welcomes new additions such as Scarlett Johansson, Mahershala Ali, Jonathan Bailey, Rupert Friend, and Manuel Garcia-Rulfo. Johansson’s character, Zora Bennett, is an expert leading secretive operations aimed at retrieving genetic material from three pivotal dinosaurs, which could be essential in crafting a life-saving medication. However, the mission takes a perilous turn when Bennett and her team stumble upon a civilian family, trapped after an encounter with an aquatic dinosaur, leading to the unraveling of unexpected truths. While several original cast members returned for Jurassic World Dominion (2022), Goldblum hinted at his subdued role in this next installment.
As a central figure in the franchise, Jeff Goldblum first appeared in the iconic Jurassic Park film, released in 1993, portraying Dr. Ian Malcolm, a witty mathematician focused on chaos theory. His captivating performance quickly turned him into a fan favorite, allowing him to reprise his role in The Lost World: Jurassic Park (1997) and make cameos in Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom (2018) and Jurassic World Dominion (2022). In a recent interview with Games Radar’s Total Film, Goldblum was questioned about his future in the series, especially since his name was absent from the cast list for Rebirth. “I think Ian Malcolm may have ridden off into the sunset. Maybe,” he remarked, indicating that he likely won’t be appearing in the new film. He also expressed no hard feelings, showing support for his friend Johansson, who leads the new project. “Because this next one [Jurassic World Rebirth] – my friend Scarlett Johansson and my new friend Jonathan Bailey from Wicked, I think, are taking up the reins. And I can’t wait to see what they do. I think that’s a good idea,” Goldblum added.
Throughout the same discussion, he addressed the criticism faced by Jurassic World: Dominion. Released four years after Fallen Kingdom, this installment faced backlash for its complicated plot that left fans baffled about its direction. Some viewers felt there was insufficient dinosaur content for a film centered around these creatures. Goldblum, however, brushed off the concerns, stating that he had a great experience filming it. “I enjoyed working on it and enjoyed trying to make it good. I think it sold a bunch of tickets. But, you know…” he chuckled. “Everybody’s got an opinion about it. It’s tough to make a good movie.” Despite garnering over $1 billion globally, Jurassic World: Dominion received a disappointing 29% on Rotten Tomatoes.
Goldblum remains an iconic presence in the Jurassic Park series. His contributions, regardless of screen time, have always added great value to the films, which is why many fans will be disheartened by his absence. Audiences are fond of his sharp wit, skepticism regarding scientific ethics, and memorable one-liners. For instance, his classic line in Jurassic Park (1993) states, “Genetic power’s the most awesome force the planet’s ever seen, but you wield it like a kid who’s found his dad’s gun.” Thus, his absence will certainly be felt. Nevertheless, the title of the new film hints at a new narrative direction, making the introduction of fresh faces, characters, and stories quite understandable.
Jurassic World Rebirth is set to premiere in theaters on July 2, 2025.
