Archie Kao, known for his role as Kai Chen in the iconic series Power Rangers Lost Galaxy, recently discussed the possibility of reviving his character within the franchise. In its seventh season, this installment of the expansive Power Rangers universe introduced a fresh core team, with Kao fittingly taking on the mantle of the Galaxy Blue Ranger. Often characterized by his strict adherence to rules, Kai accumulated memorable interactions with his fellow teammates, particularly with Leo Corbett, the Galaxy Red Ranger played by Danny Slavin. Kao’s final portrayal of Kai was in the 2002 episode “Forever Red,”from Power Rangers Wild Force, where he lent his voice to the beloved character.
During a conversation with ScreenRant about his current Hulu series, Interior Chinatown, Kao expressed a willingness to return to the Power Rangers franchise, nostalgically reflecting on the fortune of having been a part of this vibrant series. His enthusiasm for the possibility of reprising his role is evident. Here’s what he shared:
As a middle-aged Kai? I would be delighted to reconnect with that character. I don’t know how that would make sense, but I’d be game to have a conversation about it. Where’s the show now?
I wish I could take credit for its impact, but I was just lucky enough to join the cast. All these years later, I see that it has brought joy to all these people, and I got to be a beneficiary of that. I wish I could say it was my doing, but it wasn’t. But I’m so thrilled for any possible experience with them in and around the franchise. I’d be delighted to entertain that.
The Significance of Kao’s Desire to Return
Decades of Love from the Stars
Despite the fact that Kao hasn’t portrayed Kai since 2002, the character has resurfaced multiple times through archival footage in various series. His most recent on-screen appearance occurred during the final episode of Power Rangers Super Megaforce, where he popped up in a significant crossover event that utilized footage from Super Sentai, albeit without lines. Speculation suggests he may have also played a role in the concluding moments of Power Rangers Cosmic Fury, aiding in the piloting of the Galaxy Megazord. Although Kao himself has yet to reappear, his essence continues to resonate throughout the franchise.
Kao’s expressed interest in returning highlights the enduring affection that former cast members have for their roles and the series itself, even after many years. However, with the recent conclusion of Cosmic Fury marking what seems like the end of a saga that traces back to Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, the likelihood of Kao reprising his role seems diminished. Hasbro is poised to reboot the show, suggesting a clean slate that would likely rule out opportunities for previous characters to return.
Our Perspective on Kao’s Potential Return
Embracing Nostalgia with a Tribute
Even though plans are underway to initiate a reboot of the Power Rangers franchise, Kao’s eagerness to return emphasizes the potential richness of revisiting the nostalgia that previous teams evoke. A tribute to Power Rangers Lost Galaxy—similar to the recent special Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Once & Always—could resonate well with audiences, celebrating the original cast and honoring the series’ legacy. While the franchise currently sees a pause in new productions, there still exists a hopeful scenario in which Kao returns to embody the Galaxy Blue Ranger once again.
It’s worth noting that 2024 marked the first year since 1993 when a new Power Rangers series did not debut, leaving fans wondering what lies ahead for this beloved franchise.
