As Netflix’s longest-running original series, Virgin River continues to captivate audiences, it has already secured a renewal for season 7. Fans, however, are still processing the latest twists and turns from season 6. Adapted from the beloved novel series by Robyn Carr, the show delves into the lives, romances, and secrets of the residents in the quaint town of Virgin River. The series boasts a large ensemble cast, featuring notable actors such as Annette O’Toole, Tim Matheson, Alexandra Breckenridge, and Martin Henderson.
Season 5 introduced Kandyse McClure, known for her role in Battlestar Galactica, as the character Kaia Bryant. This determined firefighter becomes romantically involved with Preacher (played by Colin Lawrence), potentially altering his history of tumultuous relationships. Mclure’s talent extends beyond Battlestar Galactica, as she also featured in series like Ghost Wars, The Good Doctor, and the Charmed reboot.
Recently, Screen Rant interviewed McClure about her experience on Virgin River, her character’s journey, and the relevant themes of the show. In the discussion, she shed light on Kaia’s intriguing backstory, her dynamic with Preacher, and shared anecdotes from alongside her fellow cast members.
Insights from Kandyse McClure on Joining Virgin River in Season 5
“I thought I had a week, then I got a call saying, ‘Your call time is 6 A.M. tomorrow morning.’”
ScreenRant: First things first, tell me all of Annette O’Toole’s secrets.
Kandyse McClure: I love Annette.
I know, me too!
Kandyse McClure: She’s so amazing. God. Yeah. Getting to watch her on set is incredible. Since she has a theater background, she brings a level of specificity and preparation that is admirable. In between takes, we often chat about books and other topics, she’s so relaxed. But when she’s in front of the camera, her focus is absolutely on point. I envy that.
So she’s not the type to retreat to her trailer between takes, I assume?
Kandyse McClure: No, we usually hang out with one another. My transition into season 5 was quite different from season 6. I found that the two seasons presented unique dynamics, especially with everything happening on set! (Laughing) There were many opportunities for us to bond. For instance, in season 5, we had the carnival where everyone came together to help out; it facilitated a great camaraderie on set.
This season provided a lot more chances for us to connect. I frequently spent time with Colin and Zibby, which often included little gift exchanges that kept the environment light and personal.
Was there an adjustment period when you stepped onto the set for season 5, coming in as the new character who falls for Preacher?
Kandyse McClure: Absolutely. My first day involved some big scenes, which added to the pressure. During the midst of COVID, production had to adapt schedules, which is no easy feat. I thought I’d have more time before my call but was informed I was needed the next morning at 6 A.M.
Feeling prepared, I still faced a challenge jumping right into my major scenes, performing in front of producers and the crew, but it was all part of the excitement of being on set. I’ve been around productions since I was 17, so I quickly acclimated to the environment.
It must have felt like a debutante ball, stepping into such a prominent role.
Kandyse McClure: Exactly! It really felt like I was being introduced to a whole new society.
Exploring Kaia’s Relationship with Preacher & the Ensemble
“That relationship fosters vulnerability in both of them.”
With Kaia’s dynamic with Preacher firmly established, is she capable of accepting compliments? Or does she struggle with self-sabotage and commitment?
Kandyse McClure: That’s a layered question!
No spoilers, please!
Kandyse McClure: I would never spoil it! Kaia’s entry into the series allows for exploration of those vulnerabilities, especially as her commitment to her new life is tested.
Season 5 focused primarily on her relationship with Preacher, but is she becoming more integrated with the entire ensemble?
Kandyse McClure: Oh, absolutely! The nature of a small town means that Kaia can’t remain isolated. Whenever something happens in Virgin River, everyone is involved. It’s a fantastic way to highlight the community aspect of the story.
Preacher’s past romances have often ended in turmoil. Do you think Kaia can change that trend?
Kandyse McClure: If the writers are listening, I hope I can be that breath of fresh air! Preacher’s character has been somewhat guarded; his established role in the town and the connections he has create a significant backdrop. Yet, Kaia opens up new dimensions to him, revealing both of their vulnerabilities. It’s an intriguing shift.
My character’s flaws ironically allow Preacher to step out from his protective shell and express his vulnerabilities, which adds a unique element to their relationship.
The show’s plethora of characters means that it takes significant events to bring everyone together. Are there actors you feel keen to work with more?
Kandyse McClure: Absolutely! I always look forward to working with Annette and Tim, as their characters He and Doc embody such unique dynamics. Additionally, I enjoy the youthful energy of Sarah and Kai’s characters; the contrast between their youthfulness and the experience of older characters presents fascinating storytelling potential.
Kandyse McClure Discusses Virgin River’s Generational Themes
“I love the sewing circle whenever the sewing circle gathers.”
The sewing circle represents a profound intergenerational relationship. With friendships across many ages, your connection to older friends must provide invaluable perspectives, especially looking back and sharing wisdom.
Kandyse McClure: It’s true. The lessons shared across generations are invaluable. I’ve learned from my mother, who represents a youthful spirit despite her age, showing that life experiences shape our understanding of time and wisdom.
Absolutely, and it’s enlightening how youth is perceived differently as we age. Older individuals must often navigate regrets and validate their life experiences.
Kandyse McClure: Yes! Many people harbor regrets from their youth, especially focusing on worries that don’t matter in the grand scheme of life. Embracing life’s journey is crucial, as nothing is guaranteed in pursuit of wisdom. Every experience teaches us something valuable.
Please continue the conversation about self-discovery, growth, and wisdom, especially within the landscape of an evolving TV series.
Kandyse McClure’s Journey to Acceptance in Acting
“My mother’s side of the family consists entirely of academics.”
Now that you have accomplished so much, does your family recognize your success in acting and are they fans of Virgin River?
Kandyse McClure: My family takes immense pride in my career. However, growing up, my mother’s family comprised academics with numerous PhDs and Master’s degrees, making my pursuit of acting seem unconventional. They couldn’t fathom the idea of making a living in entertainment.
My grandfather often advised me to consider a practical trade, despite my efforts to inform him of my earnings as an actor. He continually encouraged me to pursue a ‘real’ career.
It’s great they mean well, even if they had a hard time understanding your passion.
Kandyse McClure: Indeed. While they embraced my aspirations, there was a disconnect in understanding the industry. In contrast, my father’s side comprises artists and creatives, which resonates more with my personality.
Being a blend of both cultures must offer a unique advantage in your acting career!
Kandyse McClure: I’ve thrived in that dynamic. I enjoy research and knowledge, balancing it with my artistic expression to create diverse characters.
Your diverse skill set must empower you as an actor! Have you acquired any knowledge from those working around you in your role?
Kandyse McClure: Absolutely! Learning from my neighbors, who were both firefighters—one a wildland firefighter and the other urban—allowed me to gain invaluable insights into fire safety procedures, adding to my ability to portray Kaia authentically.
Interestingly, acting provides a unique synergy between research and application. It must feel rewarding to incorporate real-life experiences into your portrayal.
Kandyse McClure: Indeed! It’s essential to remain grounded in reality, especially if I need to jump into roles that challenge my practicality.
I could continue this conversation for hours; you’re immensely engaging!
Kandyse McClure: Thank you! I’ve enjoyed this tremendously.
As we wrap up, season six has been thrilling, but what lies ahead? Are there specific aspirations or scenes you hope to explore with Kaia?
Kandyse McClure: I’m ideally interested in delving deeper into Kaia’s past—particularly her time in Colorado. Understanding her backstory could open new narrative arcs!
Fans will eagerly await the unfolding of those stories!
Kandyse McClure: Absolutely! Keep watching on December 19th and beyond for season seven!
