Keke Palmer Addresses Racism on the Set of *Scream Queens*
Keke Palmer, known for her role in the film *Nope*, has recently spoken out against a racist incident that occurred while filming *Scream Queens*, a show created by Ryan Murphy that aired for two seasons. Despite rumors of a potential revival, it’s likely that Palmer will not participate.
New Insights from *Master of Me*
In her newly released book, Master of Me: The Secret to Controlling Your Narrative, Palmer details her experiences, including the racist remark made by a co-star, whom she refers to as “Brenda.” Although she doesn’t disclose the individual’s identity, Palmer’s account casts a spotlight on the challenges she faced.
An Unfortunate Exchange
According to a report by the Los Angeles Times, the altercation began during a disagreement on set. Palmer attempted to mediate the situation, only to be met with hostility from “Brenda,” who dismissively retorted, “Keke, literally, just don’t. Who do you think you are? Martin f***ing Luther King?”
Power and Resilience
Reflecting on the incident, Palmer expressed her resolve to rise above it. She stated, “It was such a weighted thing that she said, but I didn’t allow that weight to be projected on me because I know who I am. I’m not no victim. That’s not my storyline, sweetie. I don’t care what her ass said. If I allow what she said to cripple me, then she would.”
Conflict with Ryan Murphy
The memoir also reveals tensions between Palmer and the show’s creator. Palmer recalls a moment when she had a personal commitment and was later instructed to return to set. Ignoring the directive resulted in a heated confrontation with Murphy, who she describes as behaving unprofessionally. “It was kind of like I was in the dean’s office,” she reminisced. “He was like, ‘I’ve never seen you behave like this. I can’t believe that you, out of all people, would do something like this.’”
Shifting Dynamics
Although Palmer expressed regret over the incident, the aftermath left her uncertain about her standing in Murphy’s circle of favored actors, which includes stars like Emma Roberts and Sarah Paulson. A co-star warned her about the implications of her situation, saying, “It’s bad,” which only added to her frustration.
A Business Perspective
Palmer ultimately conveyed her understanding of the industry’s nature, stating, “I’m still not sure Ryan cared, or got it, and that’s okay because he was just centering his business, which isn’t a problem to me. But what I do know is even if he didn’t care, and even if I never work with him again, he knows that I, too, see myself as a business.”
Awaiting Response
As of now, Ryan Murphy has not commented on the allegations made by Palmer, and “Brenda” seems unlikely to come forward. Nevertheless, Palmer’s willingness to share her story sheds light on the systemic issues within the entertainment industry and highlights her strength and determination to take control of her narrative.
