After a limited theatrical release, The Six Triple Eight is set to premiere on Netflix on November 20. This compelling film, directed by Tyler Perry, chronicles the real-life experiences of the remarkable women of the 6888th Battalion during World War II, as highlighted by Kevin M. Hymel in his extensive coverage. The only military unit comprised entirely of Black women, they faced overwhelming challenges to carry out a critical mission—sorting through years of postal backlog to ensure that over 17 million letters were delivered to soldiers and their families.
While the narrative follows multiple characters within the Battalion, it primarily centers on two extraordinary women: Lena Derriecott King (portrayed by Ebony Obsidian) and Major Charity Adams (played by Kerry Washington). Lena joined the unit motivated by the loss of her boyfriend in combat, while Major Adams was tasked with leading the unit, a role she initially viewed as punitive. The film also features performances by Milauna Jackson, Kylie Jefferson, and Shanice Shantay, with notable cameos from renowned actors including Sam Waterston, Susan Sarandon, and Oprah Winfrey.
In an exclusive interview with ScreenRant, Obsidian reflected on the honor of working with Tyler Perry again for The Six Triple Eight. She expressed deep admiration for Lena Derriecott King, whom she had the privilege of meeting just ahead of her 100th birthday, highlighting the guidance and leadership showcased by co-star Kerry Washington.
Ebony Obsidian Reflects on Meeting Lena Derriecott King
“She had so much gratitude and so much peace and so much joy.”
ScreenRant: What elements of this story resonate with you as you prepare for your performance?
Ebony Obsidian: Meeting Lena Derriecott King on her 100th birthday was a profoundly moving experience; she’s the oldest person I’ve ever had the honor to meet. I told her how special she was. Despite her long life filled with challenges, she radiated joy and peace. It was inspiring to observe someone who had not just witnessed history but actively participated in it. She served in the war, and yet, her contributions went largely unrecognized at the time.
This raised questions for me about how such experiences shaped her life thereafter. Lena went on to become a nurse and a dress designer during an era when there were virtually no Black female designers, exemplifying resilience and talent. Her unwavering positivity and thankfulness intrigued me; how does one maintain such a spirit amidst adversity?
While I cannot share specific personal stories she recounted, her life lessons emphasized that you can achieve what you believe in, independent of others’ perceptions.
Praising Collaboration with Tyler Perry & Kerry Washington
“[Kerry] gave us permission to be the artists that we are.”
ScreenRant: Your portrayal is truly impressive. How did you prepare to embody Lena’s strength and compassion?
Ebony Obsidian: Capturing Lena’s essence required me to connect with her spirit during our meeting. Understanding her vibrant energy and aura was invaluable. Moreover, collaborating closely with the other women in the film, who indeed felt like a battalion themselves, was instrumental. We supported each other immensely during the filming process.
Having Kerry Washington lead us as Captain Charity Adams was pivotal. As an accomplished actress, she is both talented and generous, fostering our creative exploration. Her encouragement allowed us to authentically step into our roles as real-life women of the Six Triple Eight. The authenticity of our set—some locations were actual historical sites—further immersed us in the narrative.
ScreenRant: Tyler mentioned that playing Lena was a dream role for you. Can you elaborate on your preparation journey alongside him?
Ebony Obsidian: Having previously collaborated with Tyler definitely eased our working relationship. I understood his artistic vision better, and it was a privilege to be cast in such an important historical role. Lena was not just a character; she was a remarkable woman who epitomized grace. It was a profound honor to join Tyler in honoring the contributions of Black women throughout history; both Tyler and I view this project with great respect.
