Key Insights from BlumFest 2024 at New York Comic Con (NYCC)

It’s that magical season once again! Renowned indie horror studio Blumhouse has returned to theaters with fan-favorite films and made a significant presence at New York Comic Con, revealing insights on 10 exciting upcoming projects. Thankfully, The Mary Sue got to attend the BlumFest panel this year, and trust me when I say you’re going to be thrilled about what lies ahead.

The panel, expertly moderated by Nicole Byer (Nailed It!), featured key figures from the studio, including Jason Blum, along with notable talents like Leigh Whannell (The Invisible Man), Christopher Landon (Happy Death Day), and Meghann Fahy (White Lotus). Right at the start, attendees were treated to a fun surprise—Kevin Bacon made a playful cameo encouraging everyone to “get in the van.” Afterwards, a QR code was shared, leading to a mailing list signup for The Van, Blumhouse’s fan initiative. Honestly, who could say no if Kevin Bacon is asking?

What projects are on the horizon for Blumhouse?

One aspect I’ve always admired about Blumhouse is its wide-ranging and eclectic mix of films and projects. There’s genuinely something for everyone. This new slate of films stays true to that ethos. Leigh Whannell was the first guest to join Blum on stage, sharing insights into his forthcoming Wolf-Man project and unveiling a complete trailer. If there’s anyone I trust to helm this project, it’s definitely Whannell.

Attendees were also treated to the debut trailer for Christopher Landon’s new film, The Drop. This thrilling story revolves around a woman who receives an enigmatic AirDrop during a date, dramatically altering her evening. Additionally, fans had the chance to view the film’s poster through a scannable QR code shared at the event.

The panel showcased a trailer for another much-anticipated film, Jaume Collet-Serra’s (Black Adam) The Woman in the Yard, as well as a final trailer for Blumhouse’s inaugural video game, Fear the Spotlight, set to launch on October 22. The Woman in the Yard promises to deliver unsettling thrills even in broad daylight while Fear the Spotlight appears to offer a unique exploration of the gaming landscape, infused with horror elements.

Allison Williams (Get Out) made an appearance to discuss the success of M3GAN and the sequel, M3GAN 2.0, with M3GAN herself even popping on screen to reiterate her persistent watchfulness. Director Mike Flanagan (Ouija) also joined the conversation, sharing details about his upcoming remake of The Exorcist, expressing that he “saw an opportunity to create the scariest movie I’ve ever crafted, and I simply couldn’t pass it up.” Given his work on Midnight Mass, I have no doubt about his ability to deliver a compelling experience.

Jason Blum also hinted at the development of The Black Phone 2, which was met with roaring applause. Additionally, the crowd was shown the official poster for Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 for the first time, scheduled for release on December 5, 2025. To wrap up the panel, attendees were delighted to receive exclusive T-shirts featuring all the upcoming Blumhouse film titles on the back. (Yes, I managed to snag one!)

Which film are you most eager to see? Personally, I can’t wait to indulge in all of them!
