Kojima Describes OD as “A Bit Risky” and “A Game Like No Other”

With the upcoming release of Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, Physint, and OD, Hideo Kojima and his talented team at Kojima Productions certainly have their hands full. While any new title conceived by Kojima is bound to capture interest, it is OD that has emerged as the most captivating prospect for many fans. Marketed as a horror experience that blurs the lines between a video game and a cinematic venture, OD boasts a star-studded cast and promises to be a remarkably experimental project.

In a recent interview with Variety, Kojima discussed this new endeavor, emphasizing how “risky” OD is set to be, describing it as “a game like no other” and acknowledging that it presents a “new challenge” even for him as a seasoned developer.

“This is a game, but it’s a game like no other,” Kojima stated. “I can’t delve too deeply into specifics, and it’s challenging to articulate, but it’s somewhat risky and represents a new challenge for me within the gaming space.”

This isn’t the first instance where Kojima has highlighted the distinctiveness of OD. In the past, he compared it to his earlier work, Boktai: The Sun is in Your Hand, a game he developed for the Game Boy Advance that incorporated a sunlight sensor as an integral part of its gameplay mechanics.

Later in the interview, Kojima also touched upon Hollywood director Jordan Peele‘s involvement in OD. “I was a fan of Jordan, and I went to see Nope,” he revealed. “During that time, I was hosting a podcast on Spotify. I dedicated an episode to Nope and discovered that Jordan Peele was a fan of my work. So, we arranged a Zoom call! Despite our generational differences, after just five minutes of conversation, it felt like we were childhood friends. This phenomenon occurs frequently when I connect with someone who shares a similar thought process or mindset. Ultimately, we agreed to meet in Los Angeles. After a few meetings there, we exchanged insights about our respective projects. I introduced the concept of OD to him, and he expressed significant interest, leading me to invite him to join the team.”

Previously, Kojima mentioned that Peele’s contribution to OD will be in a creative role, though he did not provide further details. He also indicated that there are other notable celebrities involved in OD as well.

Earlier this year, Kojima Productions registered trademarks for “Social Scream System” and “Social Stealth” , which may offer insights into features related to OD.
