South Korean Entertainment Industry Halts Activities in Mourning for Jeju Air Crash Victims
In response to the tragic Jeju Air plane crash that claimed the lives of 179 individuals, South Korean artists across various entertainment sectors have decided to delay their upcoming releases and activities. This heartfelt gesture serves as a tribute to the victims of one of the nation’s deadliest aviation incidents.
Television Programming Cancellations
Numerous television networks have taken action by canceling scheduled broadcasts for December 29. Major shows affected include KBS’s 2025 Countdown, SBS’s Inkigayo, as well as popular programs like Running Man and various MBC entertainment series. The KBS variety shows and the iconic The King of Masked Singer are also part of this suspension.
Idols and Solo Artists Suspend Activities
Notably, many K-pop idols and solo artists are following suit by postponing their scheduled activities and releases. This includes BTS, who has halted content related to V’s birthday and the Run Jin series. Other groups like (G)I-DLE have pushed back signing events and content launches, while IVE has rescheduled their third promotional campaign. Additionally, LE SSERAFIM has deferred the release of Yunjin’s self-composed track “Jellyfish.”
Details of the Jeju Air Incident
The unfortunate Jeju Air crash occurred on December 29, when a Boeing 737-800, returning from Thailand, attempted to land at Muan International Airport in southern South Korea. Following an unsuccessful landing attempt, the aircraft experienced a bird strike warning, prompting the pilot to issue a distress signal. Tragically, the plane came down with its landing gear retracted, overshooting the runway before crashing into a concrete barrier and igniting upon impact.
National Mourning Period Declared
As a mark of respect for the victims, the South Korean government has announced a national mourning period, which commenced on December 29 and will last until January 4. Acting President Choi Sang-mok conveyed his deep sorrow during a meeting at the Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters in Seoul, stating:
“As of today, the government designates a seven-day national mourning period until midnight on January 4. As the acting head of a government responsible for the safety and lives of its citizens, I am overcome with indescribable grief and regret.”
