Korea’s Leading Music Review Magazine IZM Rates MEOVV’s Debut Single ‘MEOW’ One Star: “An Ambiguous Form”

On Thursday, September 19, Korea’s premier music review magazine, IZM, assigned a one-star rating to MEOVV’s debut single titled MEOW. The K-pop girl group MEOVV, launched by THE BLACK LABEL, made their official debut on September 6 with the release of their first single, MEOW, but the response from IZM was far from favorable.

In their review, they criticized the track for its lack of substance and coherent intention, as well as its repetitive nature. Here’s a snippet of their critique:

“In a track that doesn’t even last three minutes, a full minute is occupied by cat sounds that hold no intention or meaning. The weightless repetition that includes the intro, outro, overdubbed chorus, and rap parts quickly becomes tiresome and, more importantly, detracts from the most essential aspect: the members’ voices.”

IZM further elaborated,

“The monotonous rhythm, inaudible lyrics, empty repetition, and one-dimensional progression are all failures. The inability to fulfill either the desired image or the intended message leaves only an ambiguous form. Why is a catchy hook song, destined to be forgotten, prioritized over good music that resonates and invites repeated listening?”

This led IZM to conclude that MEOW lacked numerous qualities that could encourage listeners to revisit the track for a more meaningful experience. Additionally, they expressed disappointment that the vocal talents of the members were overshadowed by elements such as relentless cat sounds and indistinct lyrics, which seem to aim primarily at attracting audiences through its catchy hook.
