Kraven The Hunter Experiences Significant Decline in Box Office Revenue in Second Weekend

Kraven the Hunter is making headlines for all the wrong reasons in Sony’s Spider-Verse, as its box office performance is setting unsettling records. Featuring Aaron Taylor-Johnson in the lead role, the film kicked off with a disappointing domestic debut of just $11 million. This figure marks a new low for Sony’s Marvel films, even underperforming Madame Web, which opened at $15.4 million earlier this year. Despite facing fierce competition from established titles such as Moana 2 and Wicked, which easily outpaced it by more than double, Kraven couldn’t maintain its footing in theaters.

The situation didn’t improve during its second weekend. According to reports from Deadline, the film experienced a staggering 72% drop in ticket sales. With a production budget of approximately $120 million, Kraven’s current domestic total stands at about $17.4 million as of December 22. When considering its global earnings, the film has gathered only $42.8 million so far. As the holiday season approaches with popular competitors like Sonic the Hedgehog 3 gaining traction, it appears challenging for Kraven to recover lost ground at the box office.

Implications of Kraven The Hunter’s Box Office Performance

As of its tenth day in theaters, Kraven has amassed around $17.4 million in ticket sales. For context, Madame Web had reached $28 million by its tenth day, while Morbius surpassed that with $57 million during the same period. The highly successful Venom trilogy remains the gold standard among Sony’s Marvel releases, achieving $142 million, $141 million, and $89 million by their respective tenth days. Consequently, it is improbable that Kraven will muster enough momentum to recoup its production costs.

In addition to its lackluster box office performance compared to other film installments within the Sony Marvel universe, Kraven is facing overwhelming competition during its run. This past weekend saw the film slip behind new releases like Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and Mufasa. As it currently ranks seventh at the domestic box office, it has fallen behind previous hits like Wicked, Moana, and Gladiator II.

The disappointing box office figures for Kraven were perhaps to be expected. Sony’s strategy of crafting standalone Spider-Man narratives without the titular character has led to decreasing returns, making it no surprise that this latest film is the poorest performer. Additionally, its R-rating likely hindered its reach during the holiday season, where family-friendly films dominate the market, amplifying its struggles amidst strong competition like Gladiator II.

As it stands, Kraven the Hunter is concluding Sony’s current lineup of Marvel films not with excitement, but with evident disappointment.
