Charles Soule is making a notable comeback to the Star Wars universe with the announcement of Star Wars: Legacy of Vader, a comic series that will explore the character of Kylo Ren during his tumultuous reign as the Supreme Leader of the First Order. This storyline will unfold between the events of The Last Jedi and The Rise of Skywalker. There are strong indications that Soule may reintroduce his original character, Darth Momin, into the narrative, enriching the storyline with the complexities of his past.
The initial synopsis of the miniseries offers limited details but hints at an intriguing storyline where a “face from the past will guide [Kylo Ren] on his quest.”As he journeys to Mustafar, Ren seeks not only to confront the legacy of Darth Vader but also to carve out his own identity within the galaxy.
The Anticipated Return of Darth Momin to Star Wars Lore
Darth Momin, an original creation by Charles Soule, first appeared in the fourth issue of the 2015 Lando miniseries. In that series, Momin’s helmet possessed two members of Lando Calrissian’s crew during their daring infiltration of Emperor Palpatine’s starship, the Imperialis. Following a frantic escape, the helmet was ultimately destroyed along with the ship.
Soule later revisited Momin in the 2017 Darth Vader series, which was set fourteen years earlier. Here, Momin, in a spectral form, aided Vader in constructing his fortress by possessing imperial bodies. Eventually, Vader returned the helmet to Palpatine, where it was kept aboard the Imperialis, allowing for potential future developments in the storyline.
It’s plausible that Charles Soule regretted the initial destruction of Momin’s helmet, which limited his potential narrative expansions for the character. In the Crimson Reign comic event, the Knights of Ren encountered the ghost of Darth Momin, with the narrative indicating that his spirit formed a Dark Side nexus to haunt visitors at Fortress Vader.

Darth Momin is primarily known as a Sith inventor, famous for creating the Fermata Cage, an ingenious prison capable of freezing moments in time and releasing them later. His other inventions include a powerful device designed to destroy entire cities right before their obliteration and Fortress Vader, which allowed for a connection to the Dark Side and time itself.
As Kylo Ren explores his grandfather’s ominous fortress, it is likely he will encounter the spirit of Darth Momin, who continues to haunt its corridors. While Momin’s appearance in Crimson Reign suggested he could be defeated easily, his nature as a spirit raises questions about his interaction with the physical world. Regardless, Momin’s prior resurgence is a clear indication that Soule intends to integrate him more deeply into the narrative.
Beyond a Cameo: The Potential of Darth Momin in “Vader’s Legacy”

While Momin could merely make a cameo appearance in Legacy of Vader as a ghost, there is a compelling case that Soule has larger plans for the character. Given that Soule has expressed a desire to delve deeper into Momin’s narrative, there’s a strong likelihood that the ancient Sith may become a significant antagonist in the miniseries.
Incorporating Momin as a central villain could provide a captivating conflict for Kylo Ren, especially as he grapples with his identity and struggles against the Dark Side. Should Momin retain his capabilities beyond mere specter status, he may very well have been systematically plotting within Vader’s fortress, making him a formidable foe for Ren, who is at a critical juncture in his own journey.
Charles Soule has articulated that Legacy of Vader combines elements from both his Rise of Kylo Ren and Dark Lord of the Sith narratives, focusing on a time rich with unanswered questions. This exploration could elevate Darth Momin’s role, making him integral in answering pivotal queries about Kylo Ren’s evolution and the broader universe of Star Wars.
Star Wars: Legacy of Vader #1 is set to release on February 5, 2025, from Marvel Comics, making it an eagerly anticipated addition to the Star Wars canon.
