Lady Gaga recently appeared in the second episode of Netflix’s What’s Next? The Future with Bill Gates, where she addressed the persistent rumors claiming she is a man. Lady Gaga expressed her thoughts:
“When I was in my early 20s there was a rumor that I was a man. I traveled all over the world for tours and to promote my records, and in nearly every interview I encountered, people would bring up this manipulated imagery on the internet. They’d say, ‘There are rumors that you’re a man. What do you have to say about that?’”
Lady Gaga elaborated:
“The reason why I didn’t respond to that question is that I didn’t feel like a victim of that lie. I thought: What about a kid who is being accused of that? They might think a public figure like me would feel shame. I’ve been in situations where addressing a rumor wasn’t in the best interest of others’ well-being.”
As her statements circulated on social media, numerous netizens shared their reactions. An X user, @PopBase, posted about her remarks, leading one user to comment:
“She ended stan Twitter weirdos.”
Others echoed sentiments on Lady Gaga’s approach to handling rumors, with many saying:
“Her lyrics ‘don’t be a drag just be a queen’ resonate deeper now; she’s truly THE QUEEN,” wrote another X user.
“Lady Gaga deserves more respect,” said a Twitter user.
“This is why she will always be MOTHER; you can never make me hate her,” added another social media user.
“Classy way to handle it. Very thoughtful of others,” claimed an internet user.
“This is why I don’t put my pronouns in my bio; I don’t care what people think I am,” stated another.
“I Tried to be Thought Provoking and Disruptive in Another Way”: Lady Gaga Discusses Why She Didn’t Address Rumors of Being a Man
Social media users praised Lady Gaga for her insights during the interview with Bill Gates regarding the rumor of her being a boy. She added further context during the series:
“In that situation, I tried to be thought provoking and disruptive in a different way. I attempted to use the misinformation to point out something else disruptive. I’ve learned to cope with lies being printed about me since I was 20 years old. As a performer, I find it somewhat amusing.”
This isn’t the first time Gaga has addressed such rumors. Back in 2011, she told CNN:
“Why the hell am I going to waste my time giving a press release about whether or not I have a p*nis? My fans don’t care and neither do I.”
For those unfamiliar, What’s Next? The Future with Bill Gates is currently available for streaming on Netflix. In this series, the former Microsoft CEO engages in conversations with Lady Gaga, James Cameron, Bono, and various other guests.
Additionally, Lady Gaga is preparing for the release of Joker: Folie à Deux, which will debut on October 4, 2024. For the film’s soundtrack, Gaga has teamed up with Hildur Guðnadóttir, Joaquin Phoenix, and Interscope Records. Previously, she contributed to the soundtracks of Top Gun: Maverick and A Star is Born.
