A leading creative mind behind the acclaimed John Wick series has shared insights on the status of John Wick: Chapter 5. After the premiere of John Wick: Chapter 4 in 2023, fans expressed curiosity regarding how a potential fifth film would unfold, particularly in the absence of key characters. The creative team has proactively explored different approaches, indicating a fresh perspective for the sequel.

This year marks the tenth anniversary of the John Wick franchise, celebrating its evolution into one of the most memorable series in modern cinema. Since the debut of the first film, the franchise has consistently expanded, achieving over one billion dollars in total box office revenue, driven by its innovative action choreography and engaging storytelling, firmly establishing John Wick within the realm of pop culture. Despite the immense success, a conclusion for the titular character is evident; in John Wick: Chapter 4, the beloved character portrayed by Keanu Reeves ultimately succumbs to injuries after a confrontation with Donnie Yen’s character, Caine. The character’s fate is poignantly sealed in a scene where Ian McShane’s Winston and Laurence Fishburne’s Bowery King pay tribute at Wick’s gravesite. Ultimately, the film served as a fitting closure for the saga, grossing $440 million worldwide and receiving critical acclaim, all while sparking ongoing interest in the John Wick universe, even after the protagonist’s demise.

In an exclusive interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Chad Stahelski, director and co-creator of the John Wick series, disclosed that numerous drafts of John Wick: Chapter 5 have been crafted over the years. “We can’t top what we accomplished. That’s a wrap. We found closure,”Stahelski remarked regarding the conclusive nature of John Wick: Chapter 4. “We have compelling new concepts that diverge completely from the previous storyline… as far as the narrative of [John Wick: Chapter 4], we’ve reached our peak. At least, for me, that was my culmination. We’ve concluded it… We wouldn’t aim to build on that— it needs to be a distinctly different tale.”

In addition to John Wick: Chapter 5, the franchise is expanding with an anime prequel focusing on the events that allowed Wick to retire, a television series tentatively titled Under the High Table featuring supporting characters from the Wick universe, and a spin-off centered around Caine, portrayed by Yen. Stahelski is overseeing these various projects, reflecting an enhanced role within Lionsgate, the studio that distributes the franchise. “Our goal was to develop the TV series, the anime, and additional John Wick-related projects and spin-offs, but we required one individual to unify the vision,”Stahelski noted. “As the director of all four films, I crafted the mythology and established the tone, so… I am the custodian, yet everyone is welcome.”

Building on the momentum established by the original John Wick film a decade ago, the franchise appears poised for continued prosperity, with upcoming projects like Ballerina set to release next year and multiple spin-offs in the works across various platforms. With Stahelski at the helm, the future of the John Wick saga is promising and secure.
