Sonic the Hedgehog 3 made its debut in theaters this past weekend, and early box office results highlight the franchise’s enduring popularity. The film brings back familiar favorites, including Sonic (voiced by Ben Schwartz), Knuckles (Idris Elba), and Tails (Colleen O’Shaughnessey). Notably, it also introduces several iconic characters from the gaming universe. Leading the charge as the main antagonist is Shadow, brought to life by Keanu Reeves, alongside the return of Ivo Robotnik (Jim Carrey) and his grandfather Gerald (also Jim Carrey), enhancing the narrative depth.
Agent Stone (Lee Majdoub), previously regarded as a loyal ally to Robotnik, finds himself somewhat sidelined by his employer in this installment. This shift in dynamics allows Stone to display newfound emotional complexity, suggesting that the character’s journey is just beginning. With the franchise showing no signs of slowing down, audiences can expect even more opportunities to explore the layers of both Stone and other supporting characters as the story unfolds.
The Evolution of Stone’s Relationship with Robotnik in Sonic the Hedgehog 3
“Stone kind of becomes a third wheel within this relationship…”
ScreenRant: I love Sonic 3! This film is fantastic. Stone has always been a loyal confidant of Robotnik, but with Gerald coming into the picture, how does this affect their dynamic?
Lee Majdoub: Stone kind of becomes a third wheel within this relationship, and I think he’s having a challenge finding his place amidst the interactions between Ivo and Gerald.
ScreenRant: In this film, we truly witness the evolution of Agent Stone. Can you elaborate on how the character has changed since the first movie and what new aspects you were eager to explore?
Lee Majdoub: Absolutely! In the first film, Agent Stone was somewhat of a background character, merely serving as an assistant. By the second film, he had more responsibilities, like overseeing the lab at the Mean Bean. In this new installment, we’re treated to action sequences and a deeper exploration of Stone’s emotional layers. It becomes clear that Ivo can’t function without Stone’s support, and it was thrilling for me to portray this multifaceted evolution.
ScreenRant: It’s exciting to see Jim Carrey in a dual role. How do you respond to his high-energy performances in this film?
Lee Majdoub: Thank you! The key is to be present in our scenes together. Great acting is about being there for your partner in every moment. With Jim also playing Gerald, it required careful coordination. We had discussions to ensure we both understood how to perform our roles effectively during those scenes.
ScreenRant: One memorable scene involves shaving Jim Carrey’s head on-screen. What was that experience like? Did you keep a lock of his hair?
Lee Majdoub: I get asked that a lot, and while I didn’t keep a lock, I wish I had! Jim actually suggested it himself, wanting to have this moment showcased as part of Ivo’s preparation montage. He trusted me with this task instead of hiring a professional barber, which signifies the strong rapport we’ve built over time.
What Sonic 3’s Theme of Found Family Means to Agent Stone
“I think a lot of us struggle with finding where we belong and what we’re meant to do in life.”
ScreenRant: The themes in this film are compelling. What does the theme of found family and making decisions mean for Agent Stone?
Lee Majdoub: The concept of found family resonates deeply with many. We all seek to find our place in the world. For Stone, there’s a connection born from the shared struggles of being abandoned. This shared experience creates a bond with Robotnik, highlighting the significance of their relationship.
ScreenRant: As Agent Stone navigates the aftermath of Robotnik’s plans, how is his loyalty tested?
Lee Majdoub: That’s an insightful question. Stone sees qualities in Ivo that others overlook, and he remains steadfast in his faith in Ivo, perhaps even more than Ivo believes in himself.
