Initially launched on the original PlayStation, Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver required players to utilize external memory cards to save their progress. Unlike that classic version, the newly released Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver 1 & 2 Remastered introduces an improved saving mechanic, allowing players to save their game at any point. However, it’s important to note that players may not spawn exactly where they saved, which adds a new layer of exploration.
Within the remaster, players will encounter specific rooms featuring gateways that facilitate fast travel between significant areas in the game world. This design alleviates the need to retrace lengthy pathways to access previously unreachable locations. Given the game’s propensity for backtracking, it’s highly advisable to utilize these fast travel points effectively.
Using Fast Travel in Soul Reaver
In many expansive open-world games, the need for fast travel arises to minimize the burden of repetitive exploration. In Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver, players are introduced to fast travel gates early in their adventure. However, the game offers little guidance on how to utilize these gates—merely presenting a cryptic hint. To activate a gate, players should stand upon it and press the attack button. Unvisited locations will appear grayed out, while another button press will deactivate the gate.
These gates manipulate space, allowing players to traverse considerable distances efficiently. Interestingly, players will find that the first gate they encounter cannot be used right away. Access to fast travel will become available after navigating through a corresponding door with a matching icon. The interaction with this new gate adds it to the player’s collection, preventing the frustration of needing to backtrack unnecessarily.
Upon entering a room containing a gate, players will notice a unique symbol on the wall. Engaging with the gate unlocks this symbol, which becomes crucial for navigating. Since these gates lack descriptive names, players must memorize the symbols to successfully travel between locations. To pass through the gates, players should step forward into the portal leading to the desired room.
Total Number of Gates in Soul Reaver
The remastered game features a total of 14 fast travel gates. While most are located at the entrances of new areas, some are strategically placed deeper within to save players from unnecessary backtracking. Each time you load your game, you will start anew in the Underworld, emphasizing the significance of these gates. Without them, players might find it takes them an estimated 30 minutes to walk back to previously explored regions.
