The Evolution of Lockdown Zone: Level X

From Web Novel to Animated Series

When it first emerged in 2017, Lockdown Zone: Level X was just a web novel available on the peep app, which focuses on manga and light novels. This web novel was later transformed into a manga illustrated by meshe, running from July 2020 to March 2022. In the same year, it also made its way into the webtoon format, adapted by taskey STUDIO. The anime adaptation was launched in 2024, airing from September 6 to October 12 on CBS Television in Japan.

The manga version is available in English through Denpa, who summarizes the storyline as follows (via AniTrendz):

Ryoka is suddenly startled awake by a series of frantic text messages from her mother! Clearly in a panic, Mom is worried about Ryoka’s safety but is hesitant to explain the alarming situation, believing no words could adequately describe what’s happening!

The world might be on the brink of collapse, and an enormous new life-form might be lurking on their apartment rooftop!

On October 24, the peep app is set to release 20 chapters of full-color manga for Lockdown Zone: Level X in Japanese, all of which will be accessible for free. It is anticipated that translations will follow soon, potentially by Denpa, ensuring English-speaking fans stay engaged until further details about the sequel emerge.

Understanding ‘Light Anime’

How Light Anime Differs From Traditional Anime

Lockdown Zone: Level X is classified as a ‘light anime,’ distinguishing it from more conventional anime series. Light anime typically consist of fewer episodes, making them shorter in overall duration. Additionally, these productions often feature simpler animation styles, resulting in significantly lower production costs and reduced time frames. Currently, Lockdown Zone: Level X stands as the third light anime project created by the AnimationID studio, following Moriarty’s Perfect Crime and Maarui Kanojo to Zannen na Kareshi, both of which were also released in 2024.

The rise of light anime may signal a new trend within the anime industry. As the sector expands and churns out an increasing number of series, the ability to produce shorter and more cost-effective shows is likely to gain popularity. Given that traditional anime takes considerable resources and time, with not every series generating sufficient revenue, successful entries like Lockdown Zone: Level X could pave the way for this emerging trend.
