Warning: Minor SPOILERS for Nosferatu!
The upcoming 2024 film Nosferatu presents a captivating retelling of the classic story about a young woman ensnared by a vampire with a dangerous obsession. This latest adaptation is a reimagining of F. W. Murnau’s iconic 1922 silent movie. Visionary director Robert Eggers takes the helm both as writer and director, enlisting Bill Skarsgård in the role of the enigmatic Count Orlok.
Lily-Rose Depp portrays Ellen, while Emma Corrin plays her confidante, Anna. The narrative unfolds when Ellen’s husband, Thomas (played by Nicholas Hoult), embarks on a work trip, prompting Ellen to seek refuge with Anna and her spouse, Friedrich (played by Aaron Taylor-Johnson). As Ellen’s night terrors escalate, they cast a shadow over the entire town. Nosferatu is set to grace theaters on December 25.
In a recent interview with ScreenRant, both Lily-Rose Depp and Emma Corrin shared their experiences working alongside Bill Skarsgård, noting his remarkable transformation into Count Orlok. Corrin reflected on the tragic fate of Anna, while Depp emphasized the critical importance of her character’s physical expressions, also elaborating on the interplay between the two couples in the film.
Bill Skarsgård Infuses Humanity into Count Orlok
“That’s what I think makes it so scary, is that there is a level of humanity to it. He’s not just a made-up monster.”
ScreenRant: How does it feel to act opposite Bill Skarsgård as Count Orlok?
Lily-Rose Depp: Working with him was surreal. He delivers an astounding performance, entirely immersing himself in the role. You can genuinely feel the humanity that was once there in his portrayal.
What makes it terrifying is that he embodies a real, living being who has been brought back from the dead, not just a fabricated monster. His portrayal is incredible.
Emma Corrin: There are moments where you can’t help but empathize with him. Even during the climax, I found myself feeling sorry for him—I thought he needed to confront some deeper issues.
Lily-Rose Depp Highlights the Importance of Her Character’s Physicality
“We wanted to make sure that all of those moments not only looked how they should on camera, but also that they were giving the viewer a part of her storytelling.”
ScreenRant: Lily-Rose, your character’s physicality is haunting. What preparation did you undertake for this role?
Lily-Rose Depp: We collaborated with a remarkable movement coach, Maria-Gabrielle Roti, who was instrumental in preparing me. Together, we choreographed the key movements to portray Ellen’s internal struggles visually.
It was vital that those moments not only resonated visually but also conveyed Ellen’s story to the audience. Each gesture had to reflect her internal conflict and pain.
Emma Corrin Describes the Challenge of Working with Live Rats as “Incredibly Unpleasant”
“But, also, the things you do for Robert Eggers.”
Emma Corrin: Initially, I reached out to Rob [Eggers] to inquire whether the rats would be real or CGI. His response was succinct: ‘Well, obviously real.’ I immediately regretted asking.
While I felt a strong connection with Anna’s character, I also appreciated the depth of her narrative. Rob ensures that every character, no matter how minor, is thoughtfully developed.
I loved playing Anna due to her complexity and the conflicting emotions she faces, particularly regarding her unshakeable friendship with Ellen and her staunch religious beliefs, which ultimately lead to a tragic conclusion for her arc.
ScreenRant: How was that experience?
Emma Corrin: It was just as agonizing as I expected—definitely not pleasant. But, you know, it’s all part of the extraordinary experience with Robert Eggers.
Lily-Rose Depp Believes the Two Couples Illustrate Themes of Light and Darkness
“They have to be there because those two couples almost serve as mirrors to each other in the same way that our characters do.”
ScreenRant: Can you elaborate on your collaboration with Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Nicholas Hoult in creating the couples’ on-screen dynamic?
Lily-Rose Depp: The representation of those couples is fascinating. As Emma noted previously, they embody the light and dark contrasts within the story. They reflect each other, similar to how our characters interact.
Anna admires Ellen and aspires to be more like her. Simultaneously, Thomas looks up to Friedrich, aspiring to embody his qualities. They symbolize the ideal family and relationship, which stands as an aspiration for both Ellen and Thomas but ultimately unveils a tragic reality.
