Warning: this article contains SPOILERS for 9-1-1.
Jennifer Love Hewitt’s role in the hit series 9-1-1 has been a cornerstone of the show’s narrative, but she recently announced developments that could jeopardize her character Maddie’s storyline. So far in Season 8, Maddie has seen limited character growth, with her most significant contribution being the revelation of a second pregnancy. This intriguing twist, however, may now be postponed to the anticipated Season 9.
Maddie is not just another character; she serves as a vital link among the primary cast, including her brother Buck (Oliver Stark) and her husband Chimney (Kenneth Choi), as well as being the voice of the LA Dispatch Center. Her absence from the show would be noticeable and impactful, particularly given her long-standing presence since Season 2, except for a brief hiatus during Season 5. The potential for Maddie’s departure arises amid Jennifer Love Hewitt’s commitment to a new (and nostalgic) project.
Jennifer Love Hewitt Returns to a Classic Role
Reprising Her Iconic Role in I Know What You Did Last Summer
With the announcement of the 2025 reboot of I Know What You Did Last Summer, fans expressed hope for the return of original cast members. Their optimism bore fruit as Jennifer Love Hewitt confirmed she would reprise her role as Julie James, a character that many recognize as an iconic scream queen. The news of her involvement marks a significant shift for the upcoming film.
Freddie Prinze Jr., her co-star from the original flick, will also make a return, adding to the excitement surrounding the project.
This renewed focus on her film career presents a challenge for Hewitt’s role in 9-1-1, especially with I Know What You Did Last Summer commencing production on December 3. With her official involvement being confirmed just ten days later, scheduling conflicts may affect her ability to participate fully in the ongoing season of 9-1-1. The trailer for Season 8, Episode 9 hints at a dramatic storyline involving Maddie’s kidnapping, suggesting that her absence could extend beyond a few episodes.
Explaining Maddie’s Potential Absence in Season 8
Precedents for Maddie’s Limited Appearances
Although a recent teaser suggests that Maddie will face imminent danger at the hands of a serial killer, it’s important to note that 9-1-1 has maintained a precedent of not killing off major characters throughout its nearly seven-season run. Given this track record, it’s unlikely that the series would drastically alter Maddie’s fate, particularly with the impending challenges surrounding Eddie’s (Ryan Guzman) potential departure from the show. If scheduling for I Know What You Did Last Summer limits Maddie’s screen time, the writers will have to devise a compelling narrative to justify her absence.
On the other hand, there are several plausible scenarios to explain her reduced presence. After surviving her kidnapping ordeal, Maddie could understandably take a prolonged break to spend time with Chimney and their daughter, Jee-Yun. Alternatively, an unexpected disaster might separate her from the main action. There’s also the possibility that her parents could summon Maddie and Buck back to Pennsylvania, or she might seek prenatal care elsewhere. Most simply, the show could shift the focus to its other characters, allowing Maddie’s story to pause for a while. Both Julie James and Maddie Buckley represent significant roles for Jennifer Love Hewitt, and balancing those identities might require some creative storytelling.
As fans await these developments, 9-1-1 is set to return on Thursday, March 6, on ABC.
