Madison Beer expressed her support for fellow singer Chappell Roan amidst the latter’s controversial TikTok videos addressing “creepy behavior”from fans. On August 19, 2024, Roan used TikTok to criticize fans for stalking her and harassing her family and friends.
Her video sparked public backlash, with many labeling her as ungrateful and unsuitable for a celebrity lifestyle. Others pointed out that dealing with such issues is common for anyone famous, suggesting she should have anticipated these risks by choosing this profession.
However, in an interview with NME on September 17, Madison Beer disagreed with that perspective, stating that fame should not excuse inappropriate conduct.
“I don’t think she’s [Roan] ungrateful for her fans. People have said, ‘You signed up for this. You have to deal with it now.’ And I think that’s not true. Just because she makes music and people might like it, it doesn’t mean that she signed up for that,” Beer commented.
The 25-year-old singer emphasized the need for fans to recognize celebrities as human beings, stressing that people misinterpreted Roan’s comments.
“How I took it was she was talking about the people who do things that are inherently wrong, like sit outside of her house or follow her home from an event. You can’t do that to people; you have to allow people to be human. And I think we forget that people, like our favorite artists, are human beings at the end of the day,” she stated.
Madison Beer also encouraged fans to treat their favorite celebrities with more empathy, noting that Chappell Roan’s rapid rise to fame may have been daunting for her. This is not Madison Beer’s first instance of speaking out against problematic fan behavior.
On August 28, Madison Beer took to her Instagram stories to explain why she refrains from taking photos in her hotel. She noted that the hotel is like her “temporary home”while touring, asserting her right to some private time. This coincided with the timing of Chappell Roan’s TikTok posts.
“We live in a parasocial time”— Madison Beer on making music in a social media-driven world
During her NME interview, Madison Beer reflected on the significant changes that social media has introduced to the music industry and how it has influenced fan interactions with artists. Beer, who began making music at just 12 years old, remarked:
“When I started making music, I was 12 years old. There was no such thing as TikTok. There was no real Instagram craziness. Social media was brand-new. We now live in a parasocial time.”
She noted that her longevity in the industry has empowered her to set boundaries and advocate for herself more effectively, saying she is now “listening and trusting”herself more. Madison Beer also mentioned the relentless competitiveness within the industry, sharing that her mental health significantly improved once she stopped viewing her peers as rivals.
Madison Beer, who recently released her songs “15 Minutes”and “Make You Mine,”expressed her enjoyment of the dance-pop genre, stating her long-standing desire to create music in that style.
“I think I’ve always enjoyed that vibe, and I’ve always wanted to get into it. I just didn’t know if I could make music like that because it felt like something out of my abilities. But then I was like, ‘Why do I feel that way? We could just try.’ And we leaned into it and we gave it a stab and people really liked it,” Madison Beer shared.
Throughout the interview, Madison Beer commended Chappell Roan and Sabrina Carpenter for their recent achievements in the industry after years of hard work, adding that “pop music is finally cool to listen to again.”
When asked about her current standing in the pop music scene, Beer expressed that she was “pretty happy”with where she finds herself now but admitted uncertainty about managing overwhelming fame.
Madison Beer has released two studio albums, Life Support and Silence Between Songs. She recently completed her global ‘The Spinnin Tour’ in Melbourne on September 2, 2024, performing in various cities across Europe, North America, Australia, Japan, and Indonesia, beginning her tour in Stockholm, Sweden, on February 24.
