‘MAGA Blames Democrats for the Death of a Squirrel: The Elon Musk of Squirrels’ Politicized Controversy

Republican circles have shockingly latched onto the tragic death of a squirrel, branding it as a symbol of what they perceive as the authoritarian grip of the Democratic government. This peculiar narrative has taken root as a rallying point for MAGA supporters.

The fascination with Peanut the Squirrel, known affectionately as P’Nut, appears to be an exaggeration and has little connection to current political events or the Democrats. Peanut became an internet sensation when TikTok influencer Mark Longo took the orphaned squirrel under his wing after its mother was killed. Longo cared for Peanut, nurturing him for over seven years, during which time he shared their experiences on social media, capturing moments of Peanut performing tricks, indulging in waffles, and even cuddling with him. Unfortunately, the joy was punctuated by sorrow when an anonymous complaint was lodged with the Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) alleging unsafe and illegal conditions for the pet squirrel.

It was indeed the case that Longo kept Peanut without the necessary legal permits, leading to a raid by DEC officials on October 30, where Peanut and another animal, a raccoon, were taken into custody. Initially, there was considerable uncertainty regarding their fate. Ultimately, the DEC confirmed that both animals had been euthanized, citing a rabies-related precaution after Peanut allegedly bit an investigator during the ordeal. This decision has incited fury among Longo’s supporters, many of whom believe there were more humane alternatives available rather than the swift euthanization of a pet that had posed no threat for years.

The Political Fallout from Peanut’s Death

The emergence of this story has attracted attention from Republican figures, who have inexplicably framed it as evidence of Democrats’ supposed malevolence. J.D. Vance, who is running alongside Donald Trump, declared at a MAGA rally that Trump was “fired up”about the squirrel. In a statement that seemed almost comical, Vance remarked, “Is it really the case that the Democrats murdered the Elon Musk of squirrels?” This bizarre commentary only fuels the surreal narrative.

Elon Musk has also jumped on the Peanut bandwagon, posting numerous posts ranging from humorous to absurd about the incident. In one meme, Musk suggested, “If they will raid a house for a squirrel, they’re sure as s—t going to come after you.” In another, he cheekily urged followers to “Vote For PNut! For Liberty! For Freedom!” His comments have led to widespread confusion and hilarity on social media.

Moreover, Representative Mike Collins from Georgia echoed this nonsensical narrative at a rally, stating, “This thing’s gotten so bad that they’re killing the pets, they’re killing the squirrels, they’re killing the raccoons!” It’s as if MAGA supporters have unanimously agreed on the premise that “Democrats killed a squirrel! They’re coming for us next!” portraying an almost paranoid viewpoint.

While the uproar suggests a deep political divide and an opportunity for ridicule of the Democrats, it conveniently overlooks the real context: a complex interaction between state wildlife regulations and individual pet ownership. Interestingly, the New York State DEC was established by Nelson Rockefeller, a Republican. Furthermore, this incident fundamentally revolves around legal enforcement of wildlife regulations rather than a partisan assault.

Despite the outcry, it remains a peculiar strategy for the GOP to politicize such an incident in the hope of swaying public opinion. It raises concerns over the effectiveness and logic behind trying to rally voters based on the death of a squirrel. The reality is that serious issues such as women’s rights, immigration, and electoral integrity loom largely over the political landscape, far overshadowing the fate of a beloved pet. The decision to politicize this story signals a curious desperation within the GOP, revealing their struggles to present a coherent and compelling message to constituents.
