Celebrity Big Brother: What’s Next for the Beloved Show?
Celebrity Big Brother remains a fan favorite within the reality competition landscape, but unfortunately, the series is not set to return to screens until 2026 at the earliest. This entertaining spin-off is similar to its predecessor, with a shorter duration of just one month instead of the traditional three-month format, and it omits the jury house element.
The inaugural season premiered in February 2018, highlighting Marissa Jaret Winokur as the first champion, followed by Tamar Braxton’s victory in January 2019 during Season 2. The most recent season aired in February 2022, where Miesha Tate claimed the title. Despite strong support from audiences, plans for a new season remain hesitant.
Producers’ Ambitions: A Return for Celebrity Big Brother
According to a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, production executives are eager to revive the series, although they conveyed that a 2025 return is not feasible. The original launch in 2018 happened to coincide with the Winter Olympics, while a follow-up season faced similar timing challenges. The show’s last airing marked nearly three years since its conclusion, leading to mounting anticipation for its return.
Executive Producer Allison Grodner noted, “If you look at it, and again, we can’t speak for CBS, the history of Celebrity Big Brother has it going against the Winter Olympics.”While acknowledging that the 2019 season successfully navigated this issue, she added, “We’ve heard rumblings that [airing opposite the Olympics] might be the way that Celebrity is utilized.”
Desire for a Sooner Comeback
Despite some internal hesitations from CBS about scheduling, Grodner indicated her and her co-producer Rich Meehan’s genuine interest in reinstating the series sooner rather than later. “We think Celebrity is its own thing and is worthy of being on every other year or annually,”Grodner stated. “It’s been a lot of fun, and we’re hoping to see it come back.”
Rich Meehan concurred, expressing his enthusiasm for the series, but reminded fans that broader programming decisions affect the show’s timeline. He stated, “There are usually much bigger things in play, like its scheduling and how much time they have on air… There’s a lot of other things that go into it.”With the next Winter Olympics not slated until February 2026, the producers’ hands may be tied for now.
We can’t speak for CBS, but we agree with you. We think Celebrity is its own thing and is worthy of being on every other year or annually. It’s been a lot of fun, so we’re hoping to see it come back.
What Would an Annual Season of Celebrity Big Brother Mean for CBS?
Fan Enthusiasm for Shortened Seasons
With three episodes airing each week alongside live feeds, Big Brother stands as one of television’s most demanding shows. When the seasons conclude, fans often find themselves yearning for more, and Celebrity Big Brother perfectly fills that gap. In December 2023, the exciting “Big Brother Reindeer Games”showcased archived favorites in a condensed format, entertaining viewers while they awaited the summer season.
Celebrity Big Brother sets itself apart by pushing celebrity competitors beyond familiar boundaries, testing their physical, mental, emotional, and social resilience in unexpected ways. The genuine dedication displayed by serious competitors makes it compelling viewing, combining intense strategy with moments of fun and chaos.
