Within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), the Guardians of the Galaxy find themselves at a transitional juncture, with several key members exploring solo endeavors. On the comic book front, however, Marvel has already laid the groundwork for a seamless reintroduction of Star-Lord, albeit under a new alias. By providing him with a substantial power boost and a fresh suit, there’s a compelling narrative opportunity for him to step back into the spotlight as Major Victory, temporarily setting aside his Star-Lord identity.
The 100th Anniversary Special – Guardians of the Galaxy #1 (2014) showcases a creative collaboration involving Andy Lanning, Ron Marz, Gustavo Duarte, Edgar Delgado, and Joe Sabino. This issue revolves around the titular team, notably omitting Star-Lord, who is presumed dead throughout the storyline. Released during Marvel’s 75th anniversary, this comic posited potential future narratives for the company leading into its 100th milestone. Interestingly, by the conclusion of the issue, Star-Lord re-emerges as a crucial player in the Guardians’ ongoing battle against Galactus, thus marking his comeback.
Star-Lord’s Return Is Inevitable
Marvel Comics Offers Abundant Paths for Peter Quill’s Comeback
In a fierce encounter against Silver Galactus, the Guardians’ roster features Gamora, Drax the Destroyer, Rocket Raccoon, Groot, and Charlie-27. They receive unexpected backup from Rocket’s “nephews,” Uno, Duo, and Trey, along with Iron Man from an alternate Earth (Earth-14971). Meanwhile, Gamora has embraced the title of Star-Lord following Peter Quill’s assumed demise. In this memorable conflict, they initially face Major Victory, only to discover he is an ally and a long-time friend, contributing significantly to their efforts to save Knowhere and defeat Silver Galactus. With several identities to his name, Peter Quill would undoubtedly excel in the role of Major Victory within the MCU.
Currently identifying as Justice, Vance Astro (formerly Vance Astrovik) carries a variety of aliases, including Major Victory, Major Astro, and Marvel Boy. Although not among the most recognized Avengers, he remains a key figure within the original Guardians of the Galaxy as per comic lore. The MCU version of this team, adored by fans, presents an ideal opportunity to introduce Major Victory in a way that feels organic. Rather than needing to establish Vance from scratch as a new character, Peter Quill could take on the mantle, paving the way for an exciting new chapter.
Major Victory: A New Chapter for the Guardians
In the anniversary special, Quill assumes the identity of Vance, highlighting his adaptability in various situations. Given Peter’s established history with superpowers, it’s plausible to imagine a narrative twist that could grant him telekinetic abilities akin to those of Major Victory. As the MCU currently depicts Star-Lord on Earth reconnecting with his family, there remains ample room for a heroic comeback. This would provide a perfect segue for integrating Major Victory into the cinematic realm, allowing audiences to explore more cosmic adventures while keeping the storyline closely aligned with Marvel’s comic legacy.
