In a remarkable twist of fate, one of the MCU’s notable actors has re-emerged in What If…? Season 3, reviving a character whose initial debut left much to be desired six years ago. The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) is widely acclaimed for its choice of actors, exemplified by Robert Downey Jr.’s iconic portrayal of Tony Stark. However, even a franchise renowned for its casting accomplishments has seen its share of missteps, leading to some celebrated talents being given forgettable roles.
Fortunately, the MCU is traversing a transformative period that allows for redemption of these overlooked characters. With the introduction of the multiverse, Marvel can seamlessly reintegrate characters who were less than memorable, presenting them as variants from alternative realities. This innovative storytelling technique has led to a vibrant array of MCU variants appearing in various films and shows throughout the Multiverse Saga, with one actor’s recent return serving as a prime example of redemption.
Walton Goggins: One of the MCU’s Most Underutilized Talents
Goggins’ Portrayal of Sonny Burch in Ant-Man and the Wasp
Walton Goggins, celebrated for his standout performances in critically acclaimed series such as Vice Principals and notable films like Django Unchained and The Hateful Eight, has solidified his status as a respected figure in Hollywood. Despite his accolades, Goggins found himself in the MCU as Sonny Burch—unarguably one of the franchise’s more forgettable characters.
Appearing in Ant-Man and the Wasp, Sonny Burch is depicted as a duplicitous businessman who attempts to betray Hank Pym to seize control of his mobile lab. Although Burch’s antics set the stage for Giant-Man’s reveal, his role was largely peripheral, leading to a quick demise when he was captured. Subsequently, Goggins did not reprise his role in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania or any other live-action MCU project, leaving fans wanting more from his character.
What If Season 3: Walton Goggins Makes a Strong Comeback
Sonny Burch Returns As a Secondary Villain
In What If…? Season 3, Episode 6, Goggins is reintroduced in a significantly enhanced role as a secondary villain. Set in an alternate universe reminiscent of the Wild West, this episode features Shang-Chi and Kate Bishop as the protagonists on a mission to thwart the nefarious Hood. Here, Goggins’ portrayal of Sonny Burch evolves into a more formidable character, showcased as an accomplice to the Hood with a sinister device capable of hypnotizing his victims.
In this reimagined context, Burch demonstrates far greater menace, overpowering Kate Bishop and nearly ensnaring her completely until she is jolted back to reality by the sound of a bell. Goggins successfully embodies the essence of a villain deserving of a more prominent presence in the MCU. Moreover, with Burch still existing in this narrative universe, there remains a possibility for future appearances, presenting a chance for either a live-action revival or further explorations within the multiverse.
