In the realm of hero shooters, Marvel Rivals stands out with a remarkable roster that serves as one of its greatest assets. With 33 captivating characters at launch, players can expect both renowned icons and lesser-known figures from the extensive Marvel universe. What sets Marvel Rivals apart is not just the variety of characters but the rich lore that binds them together—offering players a deep dive into character relationships and narratives.
The game enhances its storytelling through pre-battle dialogues featuring interactions between heroes and villains. One standout element is the array of team-up moves, which reflect established comic relationships. For instance, a notable move involves Scarlet Witch and Magneto, drawing on their tumultuous familial ties. However, there is one significant aspect of their connection that Marvel Rivals has yet to address, and its inclusion would greatly enrich the gameplay experience.
Marvel Rivals Should Introduce Quicksilver to the Roster
Understanding Quicksilver’s Connection to Magneto
Initially introduced in 1964’s Uncanny X-Men #4, Wanda Maximoff and her twin brother Pietro began their journey as orphans under the care of Magneto and the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants. It was later revealed in the 1980s that Magneto was their biological father, a revelation that stemmed from his past relationship with Magda, who birthed the twins before escaping. This pivotal connection shaped much of their storyline in the Marvel comics.
The tangled nature of this relationship persisted for decades until the release of the 2014 AXIS crossover, which introduced significant retcons. When a spell cast by Scarlet Witch backfires, it harms Quicksilver, casting doubts on Magneto’s paternal status. New canon suggests that their powers derive from the High Evolutionary’s experiments, rather than Magneto’s mutant genes.
Despite the complications, many fans continue to embrace their original connection. In Marvel Rivals, while there are hints of a strong bond between Magneto and Scarlet Witch through their team-up move “Metallic Chaos,”the absence of Quicksilver detracts from the game’s cohesion concerning the Maximoff/Eisenhardt family.
The Case for Quicksilver’s Inclusion in Marvel Rivals
Although Marvel Rivals features a diverse array of superpowers, it lacks a dedicated speedster, making Quicksilver a valuable addition. Integrating speedster mechanics presents unique challenges, but with developer NetEase’s track record of successfully adapting various abilities to fit the hero shooter format, Quicksilver could bring dynamic gameplay to life.
Exploring the Potential of Polaris in Marvel Rivals
Another character worth considering is Lorna Dane, also known as Polaris, who first appeared in Uncanny X-Men #49 in 1968. With the ability to manipulate magnetic fields, Polaris fits seamlessly within the family dynamics of Magneto, Scarlet Witch, and Quicksilver. Although the specifics of her relationship with Magneto have also undergone changes over the years, she is generally accepted as his biological daughter.
Introducing Polaris would not only broaden the character spectrum of Marvel Rivals, but her abilities could be utilized strategically in-game. As a Specialist, she could employ her magnetic powers to support teammates—similar to combat-support characters in other popular games, such as Juno from Overwatch, who uses shields and health boosts to assist allies.
