Jake Weaver, an ardent fan of Defiant Comics and host of the Midnight on Earth podcast, has initiated a Kickstarter campaign for “‘Schism: Be Careful What You Dream.’” Supporters can select from two distinct options: either four individual issues available in print or digital format, or a deluxe hardcover edition that compiles these issues. Notably, numerous key figures from Defiant’s original roster—including Shooter, JJ Jackson, and David Lapham—are collaborating on this revitalized project.

In the wake of booming successes from publishers like Valiant and Image Comics, several new entities ventured into the comic book realm, eager to carve their niches. Publishers such as Malibu with the Ultraverse and Dark Horse with Comics’ Greatest World emerged monthly to compete for audience attention. Amid this flourishing landscape, Defiant Comics entered the scene. Founded by Jim Shooter after his departure from Valiant, Defiant pushed the boundaries of superhero narratives in unprecedented directions.

Setting itself apart, the Defiant Universe focused on imaginative, science fiction-driven plots, which deviated from the straightforward superhero tales dominating the charts at the time. This financial strain was compounded by the 1994 comic book market crash, leading to an inevitable downturn in the company’s fortunes.

Following the closure of Defiant, Jim Shooter attempted to establish another comic universe with Broadway Comics, but this venture lasted less than a year.

The timing of Defiant’s demise was particularly unfortunate, as it coincided with the buildup to a major crossover event, Schism, which promised to redefine the Defiant Universe. Already in the finishing stages, house ads for Schism had begun appearing in Defiant’s last publications, but the company ultimately faded away, taking the anticipated storyline with it.
