Rogue and Gambit stand as one of Marvel’s most iconic couples, a status earned through a rich and evolving love story that has captivated fans for decades. Their relationship culminated in a long-anticipated marriage, yet it wasn’t always a straightforward journey to this point. At one stage, harsh decisions loomed over their future, as Marvel considered the possibility of permanently separating this beloved X-Men duo.
In a recent episode of the “Women of Marvel”podcast, the writer Kelly Thompson discussed her experiences in crafting their narrative for the 2018 Rogue & Gambit miniseries. She revealed how she became involved with these characters at a time when their relationship was uncertain:
Rogue and Gambit had definitely sort of fallen away from each other for a long time. And Marvel came to me. They knew I was interested in both characters. And they were like, well, “OK. Well, maybe we’re thinking about something for Rogue and Gambit.” And so, that was how it came to be. And then we were leaving it actually kind of open as to whether it would actually get them back together, or just sort of come to an understanding and they’d go their separate ways.
Thompson emphasized that Marvel was initially ambivalent regarding the future of Rogue and Gambit’s relationship, even contemplating a breakup at the conclusion of the miniseries. Fortunately, her storytelling choices deviated from this path, ultimately preserving what many fans consider the hallmark of X-Men romance.
A Turning Point: Gambit and Rogue’s Relationship on the Brink
Thanks to Kelly Thompson, Rogue’s Commitment to Gambit Becomes Official
For years, fans have been entranced by Rogue and Gambit’s “will-they-won’t-they”attraction. Due to Rogue’s ability to absorb the powers of anyone she touches, her fear of causing harm has, in the past, driven her to distance herself from Gambit. Their romance has been complicated further by previous love interests—Rogue has been romantically linked with characters such as Deadpool and Magneto—yet these two always find their way back to one another, until serious doubts about their future were raised by Marvel.
Thompson was clear about her intentions for the couple’s arc, which played a vital role in solidifying their marriage. She shared on the podcast how the direction of their story unfolded:
And then, while I was working on it, it was the idea from Marvel to get them married. And so, we were like, “well, I guess we’re getting them back together at the end of this.” Which was, of course, what I wanted. So Rogue and Gambit really delves into a lot of their past stuff. They go to therapy while they’re trying to rescue some mutants.
While it was Marvel’s proposal for Rogue to marry Gambit, Thompson’s genuine affection for their romance and her adept handling of their reunion played crucial roles in making this outcome a reality. The Rogue & Gambit series not only forced the couple to confront their past issues through couples therapy but also strengthened their bond, reinforcing the notion that they could succeed as partners. Thompson’s dedication ensured that their relationship remained intact during a period of uncertainty.
