Warning: Contains SPOILERS for Infinity Watch #1!
The Infinity Stones, some of the mightiest artifacts in Marvel Comics, have been central to countless narratives due to their immense power, especially when united. Their allure has attracted myriad seekers, each eager to harness their capabilities. In a surprising twist, Marvel introduces a new cadre of villains with a peculiar approach: they aim to consume the Infinity Stones.
In Infinity Watch #1, crafted by the talents of Derek Landy and Ruairí Coleman, the latest bearers of the Infinity Stones are acclimating to their newly established headquarters. As they convene to discuss their formidable powers, an urgent alert triggers their teleportation to New York City. There, the newly formed Infinity Watch confronts a fresh team of antagonists known as the Apeiron.
Although the comic doesn’t delve deeply into the origins or identities of the Apeiron, it establishes them as multiversal villains who traverse dimensions with a singular goal: to devour Infinity Stones. Their newfound focus? The Infinity Watch.
The Apeiron: Ideal Foes for the God-Tier Infinity Watch
A Unique Challenge: The Infinity Watch’s True Foes
The introduction of this new Infinity Watch team in 2024’s Marvel Annual books raised the crucial question of their adversaries. Unlike previous iterations, where members simply held the Infinity Stones, the current team has fused with their respective Stones. This fusion empowers them to manipulate reality and time as effortlessly as Spider-Man navigates through New York City.
Fans may have initially worried about who could possibly pose a threat to such a powerful team. However, the emergence of the Apeiron brings reassurance. These villains are uniquely capable of confronting the Infinity Stones, having done so successfully in prior encounters, confirming their formidable threat level.
Surprisingly, the Apeiron Could Be the Least of the Infinity Watch’s Concerns
The Introduction of Avery Zala: A Greater Threat?
While the Apeiron serves as suitable adversaries for this new iteration of the Infinity Watch, they might not be the primary threat. Enter Avery Zala, introduced in the same comic. Zala, a Stone Bearer wielding the Mind Stone from an alternate universe, arrives in Earth-616 after witnessing his allies devoured by the Apeiron. He seeks to coerce the main Infinity Watch to assist him in restoring his universe, even resorting to force.
Zala’s ruthless actions, including the murder of fellow Stone Bearer Colleen Wing, demonstrate his lethal capabilities, indicating a potentially devastating ambition. He could eliminate the Infinity Watch and reshape Earth-616 to suit his desires, jeopardizing the Marvel universe in the process. Yet, the overall chaos stems from the Apeiron, positioning them as the most immediate threat.
Furthermore, the presence of the Apeiron shifts the narrative surrounding the Infinity Stones within Marvel Comics, as they perceive these artifacts not merely as sources of power but as literal sustenance.
Infinity Watch #1 is now available for Marvel enthusiasts and offers a fresh perspective on beloved lore.
