Attention: Spoilers for Based on a True Story Season 2!
In the latest season of Based on a True Story, Melissa Fumero showcases her detective talents in an intriguing new way. Fumero’s acting journey began with the soap opera One Life to Live and its legendary companion, All My Children. She gained widespread recognition as Amy Santiago in the hit series Brooklyn Nine-Nine, where she was a pivotal character throughout its eight seasons. Since then, Fumero has expanded her repertoire, appearing in projects like Hulu’s animated series M.O.D.O.K. and Netflix’s Blockbuster, while also taking on directing roles in shows like Grand Crew, Gordita Chronicles, and Primo.
In Season 2 of Based on a True Story, Fumero steps into the shoes of Drew, a mother who forms a friendship with Kaley Cuoco’s character, Ava, who is eager to escape the confines of her true crime fixation. However, as they explore a crime scene together, Ava discovers that Drew is, in fact, a detective probing into a series of local copycat killings, piquing Ava’s interest in staying one step ahead of the law. The narrative takes a darker turn as the season unfolds, revealing that Drew harbors secrets that challenge her identity.
The ensemble cast for Season 2 includes both new and familiar faces such as Chris Messina, Tom Bateman, Liana Liberato, and Sara Paxton. Under the creative leadership of Annie Weisman, known for her work on Physical, the series retains its blend of dark humor and mystery while introducing unexpected twists and turns that keep the audience guessing.
Post-season finale, ScreenRant had an exclusive interview with Melissa Fumero to delve into her experiences on Based on a True Story Season 2, her excitement about joining this dark comedic universe, and her reflections on her character’s evolution. Additionally, she shared insights into the references connected to her role in Brooklyn Nine-Nine, while candidly discussing the low odds of a revival for the beloved sitcom.
Fumero Enjoyed Collaborating with Cuoco and Her Improv Style
“We had kind of a great, easy chemistry from the get-go…”
ScreenRant: It’s a pleasure to reconnect, Melissa! I’m really enjoying Season 2 of Based on a True Story, even more than the first season, which set a high standard. Can you share what attracted you to your character and this project?
Melissa Fumero: I shared a love for the show even before joining the cast. When the role was offered to me, my excitement was palpable because first, Based on a True Story is exceptional. The blend of humor and unexpected elements is captivating. Remarkably, it manages to balance humor alongside its graphic moments. It might seem odd to say, but the visceral experiences can be surprisingly enjoyable! [Laughs] I was thrilled to receive that offer, especially joining such a stellar cast.
I had previously crossed paths with Chris Messina through our respective projects, The Mindy Project and Brooklyn Nine-Nine, but I hadn’t had the chance to collaborate with Kaley before. Being a fan of the show and its cast, receiving that call felt like a dream come true.
It’s evident that the tone shift is compelling, particularly since you’ve excelled in comedies like Brooklyn Nine-Nine and Blockbuster. Did this change affect your approach to the role?
Melissa Fumero: To an extent, yes and no. My primary goal is authenticity with every character I portray. The more genuine the performance, the greater the comedic impact. However, this role demanded a different approach compared to my previous comedies as I found myself mainly in the role of the straight woman. Kaley is an excellent improviser who enjoys ad-libbing, and that added a fun dynamic to our interactions. Our chemistry was evident from day one, which was a relief, especially since I joined without a chemistry read.
We hit it off from the start and had an amazing time discovering the complex friendship between our characters. The rapid connection allowed us to play off each other’s energy, leading to effortless scene collaboration. With Kaley’s improvisational style, we found our rhythm organically, quickly revealing who Drew and Ava truly are.
Weisman Had a Distinct Reason for Casting Fumero
What about the dramatic reveal that your character is a cop investigating the murders? The visual style in which that is introduced is striking; how was filming that sequence?
Melissa Fumero: Annie Weisman, the showrunner, is someone I admire greatly, and during our initial meeting, she expressed the desire to add a playful twist—recognizing my history with Brooklyn Nine-Nine. The meta-humor and satire were essential components, especially as Drew’s true identity is unraveled. I felt thrilled to contribute to such a grand moment!
In honesty, my involvement in that sequence felt straightforward as the creative team provided clear direction: “Walk in, claim the space, and own the role of the cop.”This straightforward guidance made my role much easier. The artistic choices, from the lighting to the cinematography, are what I genuinely appreciate—setting a particular mood that propels the narrative forward and gives those moments heightened stakes.
Leading into the shocking second reveal, where we learn that you’re not just a cop but also Matt’s ex-wife—what was your take on that plot twist, especially when you delivered your powerful monologue confronting Ava, Nathan, Matt, and Tory?
Melissa Fumero: I was fortunate that Annie and Jaclyn kindly briefed me on my character’s complexities before filming. There’s a thrill in embodying secrets, and Drew’s journey was filled with unexpected layers. The reveal certainly took me aback, as the audience is led to suspect something is amiss with Drew, yet the true connection remains hidden. I commend anyone who anticipated that she was Matt’s ex-wife—an impressive feat!
Filming that poignant confrontation was a unique experience. It was my first scene alongside the entire cast, making it a somewhat intimidating prospect. Thankfully, the team was incredibly supportive, especially Chris Messina, who offered heartfelt encouragement. Once I committed to the scene, the focus became on delivering the moment authentically. It was also my first on-screen death scene, which felt monumental, and let me tell you, managing fake blood was more intricate than I expected!
Fumero Expresses Emotional Insights on a Potential Brooklyn Nine-Nine Revival
She’s Open to a Season 3 Return, However
As we approach the end of our time, I’m curious about your thoughts on a potential Brooklyn Nine-Nine revival, given that the series concluded not too long ago.
Melissa Fumero: The idea of a revival has crossed our minds, and we definitely miss each other’s company. However, Andre’s absence would profoundly change the dynamic, making it tough to envision that happening. I genuinely look forward to collaborating on other projects with my former co-stars. Stephanie and I launched a podcast together, and we’ll always be seeking opportunities to reunite onscreen.
Let’s hope for those future collaborations! Additionally, if Based on a True Story continues into Season 3, I’d love to see some flashbacks to explore more of your and Matt’s backstory.
Melissa Fumero: Flashbacks could be an amazing addition!
