As the television world gears up for the return of Dexter Morgan in Dexter: Resurrection, showrunner Clyde Phillips shared intriguing insights into how Michael C. Hall played a pivotal role in the sequel’s development. This new installment not only revives Hall’s iconic character but also builds upon the expanding universe that includes Dexter: Original Sin. Originally airing from 2006 to 2013, the Dexter series spanned eight seasons, capturing the imagination of a dedicated fanbase.
In a recent interview with Screen Rant, Phillips revealed that Hall’s enthusiasm for revisiting Dexter’s story sparked the idea for the sequel. Hall initiated the conversation about continuing the narrative beyond Dexter: New Blood, reaching out directly to Phillips. Following their discussion and subsequent pitches to Showtime and Paramount, the project received the green light, coinciding with the filming of Original Sin. As Phillips stated:
It’s a whole new show. Michael Hall called me and said, “you know what? I’ve got Dexter in my bones. Clyde, you’ve got Dexter in your bones. Let’s keep going. Can you figure it out? How can I have survived what happened in the finale?”
My team and I figured it out, pitched it to Michael. He loved it. Pitched it to Showtime and Paramount. “They’re not going to say no to this. I mean, it’s their biggest show!”And we start shooting that in a month. So, all while shooting Original Sin, we were writing Resurrection.
Although both projects were written and filmed concurrently, Phillips clarified that Original Sin and Resurrection remain distinct entities, with minimal overlap in themes and storytelling:
Other than the fact that Dexter is who he is, they’re separate entities.
Implications of Phillips’ Insights for Dexter: Original Sin
Hall’s Continued Involvement in the Prequel
Despite the distinct nature of Original Sin and Resurrection during their respective premiere seasons, Michael C. Hall remains an essential connective thread. Not only will he reprise his role in the sequel series, but he will also serve as a producer and narrator for the prequel. Thus, while Hall passes the torch of Dexter to Patrick Gibson in the prequel, his influence will resonate throughout the franchise.
Our Insights on Phillips’ Tease for Dexter: Original Sin
An Expansive Future for the Dexter Franchise
The conclusion of the original Dexter series over a decade ago hasn’t diminished the franchise’s vitality. Plans are underway to broaden its horizons with various spin-offs, including narratives focusing on characters like Harrison Morgan (played by Jack Alcott) and even an origin story for the Trinity Killer. The future looks promising as Hall’s eagerness to step back into Dexter’s shoes indicates that both Resurrection and Original Sin could flourish beyond their initial seasons.
Looking ahead, although Phillips has ruled out any crossover storylines between Dexter: Resurrection and Dexter: Original Sin for their current versions, there exists potential for future seasons to blend their narratives, thereby enriching the overall tapestry of the Dexter universe.
