Miles Morales Encounters a Deity in Marvel’s Expansion of Its Pantheon, Gaining a New Mission

Warning: This article contains SPOILERS for Miles Morales: Spider-Man #28

Miles Morales is currently grappling with the toxic effects of Varnae’s curse, and in a desperate move, Black Panther and Shuri guide him to a sacred realm that few have the honor to witness. Here, before the formidable panther god Bast, Miles discovers that his soul is destined for a greater purpose. This encounter marks the introduction of a new deity into the Earth-616 universe.

In the latest installment, Miles Morales: Spider-Man #28, crafted by Cody Ziglar and Daniele Di Nicuolo, Miles is on a quest to liberate himself from the curse of vampirism. After receiving the King of Wakanda’s approval to enter the Sacred Realm, Miles and T’Challa are confronted by a resentful goddess.

The Great Kwaku Anansi Claims His Champion

Miles Morales meets the Spider-Totem god, Kwaku Anansi.

Kwaku Anansi, a notable figure in Akan folklore, is not only a trickster god but also a moral teacher who confronts his followers with challenges to impart wisdom. He intricately weaves tales that reflect the complexities of fate and destiny. As a guardian of the Web of Life and Destiny, Anansi possesses profound influence over the smaller spider forces which traverse its delicate strands. While he has previously aided the Spider-Army in their battles against the Inheritors, this marks his debut in the Earth-616 saga.

In contrast to Bast’s regal demeanor, Anansi’s vibrant personality shines through as he engages in playful banter. Despite his light-hearted nature, he springs into action to help Miles, kneeling to meet his gaze and making a compelling promise: Miles can be liberated from his vampiric affliction, but he must weave a tale so captivating that it will endure through time. United in their intentions, Bast and Anansi collaborate, as they prepare Miles and T’Challa for a trial by combat that will determine their fate.

While Anansi’s demeanor may appear whimsical and detached, he staunchly defends Miles against Bast’s critical gaze. As an entity deeply connected to the fabric of the cosmos, Anansi perceives the complex interplay of time and actions. He places his faith in Miles, understanding that it’s essential for a champion to prove their worth through skill. This lesson has been well learned by T’Challa through his own encounters with the judgment of Bast.

Having recently gained mastery over the Multiverse, Miles finds himself now embroiled in a different kind of challenge. This journey not only enhances his training with T’Challa but also allows him to forge a profound bond with Anansi, similar to T’Challa’s relationship with Bast. Just as Peter Parker served as a significant mentor for Miles as Spider-Man, T’Challa can provide guidance as he reconnects with his spiritual heritage. Once Varnae’s curse is definitively lifted, Miles could emerge as an admirable champion for Kwaku Anansi in the mortal realm.
