Markus Persson Announces Plans for a Spiritual Successor to Minecraft
Markus Persson, popularly known as Notch, has intriguing news for fans of Minecraft. After engaging with the community through a recent poll, he confirmed intentions to develop a “spiritual successor”to the iconic game. Originally launched in 2009, Minecraft quickly garnered immense popularity, solidifying its status in the gaming world. Notch’s groundbreaking creation was sold to Microsoft in 2014 for an astonishing $2.5 billion.
Since the sale, Notch has maintained a low profile, primarily focusing on Minecraft, which remains his only comprehensive release since its debut. Although he did embark on developing an unfinished sci-fi project titled 0x10ᶜ, recent developments reveal that he is eager to dive back into game creation. A notable aspect of this new chapter involves actively considering fan feedback on what direction to take.
In a recent poll shared on his X account, Notch posed the question of whether he should continue developing his beloved franchise or explore the idea of creating a “spiritual successor”to Minecraft. The response was overwhelmingly positive, with over 270,000 fans participating. A remarkable 81.3% of respondents favored the option to “make Minecraft 2 boomer.”
Following the poll, Notch provided an update via another post on X, where he expressed that he had “basically announced Minecraft 2.”He seems open to developing a new game closely resembling Minecraft, reassuring fans with a casual statement: “I don’t super duper care exactly which game I make first… but I do know I’m making one.”
