Minecraft to Cease PlayStation VR Support by Next Year

Despite Minecraft maintaining its popularity for over 15 years, it appears that Mojang Studios has struggled to replicate the same success with alternative titles. Spin-off games such as Minecraft Dungeons, Minecraft Earth, and the recent addition, Minecraft Legends, have failed to make a significant impact. Now, it seems that the virtual reality version of the game is facing a similar fate, receiving what could be considered the final nail in the coffin.

In a official blog post, Mojang Studios revealed that support for the game on PlayStation VR will cease in March 2025.

This announcement was included in the patch notes for the 1.21.30 update of the Bedrock Edition. Among various updates highlighted, a brief mention under the title “PlayStation VR” indicated that Mojang would discontinue support for the headset after five years of official backing, which had started in 2020. This raises many questions for current users of the VR platform.

For those who enjoy Minecraft on PlayStation VR, the discontinuation means they will lose access after the final update is released. Players now have only a few months before the service is fully retired. However, Minecraft continues to be fully supported on PlayStation with ongoing updates and features.

The concept of experiencing the game through virtual reality was intriguing, but the reasons behind the cessation of VR support remain unclear. It appears Mojang Studios is currently facing challenges, as evidenced by the mixed reactions to the trailer for the upcoming Minecraft movie, which has also received criticism from fans.

In addition to these updates, the patch notes have introduced the highly anticipated bundles feature for the Bedrock version of the game. This feature will enhance players’ inventory capacity and operates similarly to a shulker box, although it is much easier to craft. Players can create a bundle using one piece of leather combined with a string.
