Molly C. Quinn Discusses Unlicensed Season 2 Return, Her Character’s New Romance, Season 3 Insights, and James Gunn’s DC Universe

Molly C. Quinn returns to the spotlight in the second season of Unlicensed, a quirky and captivating mystery series that blends humor and intrigue. Quinn, who gained recognition as the daughter of Richard Castle in ABC’s acclaimed series Castle, has progressively broadened her range within the entertainment industry. Her recent works include roles in the blockbuster Guardians of the Galaxy films, the comedy We’re the Millers, and several original audio dramas from Night Vale Presents.

In the Unlicensed series, Quinn takes on the role of Molly Hatch, a divorced woman who has embraced sobriety for two years. To add dimension to her life, she accepts a position as an assistant to the eccentric PI Lou Rosen, located in the outskirts of Los Angeles. Season 2 continues the story as Molly, now a partner, investigates a shadowy organization while Lou delves into the mysterious disappearance of a ghost-hunting influencer who vanished during a live stream.

The supporting cast features familiar faces, including Lusia Strus (from Good Behavior) as Lou and TL Thompson, a veteran of Night Vale, serving as the show’s narrator. Additionally, Season 2 welcomes guest appearances from talents like Jonny Atkinson, Brennan Lee Mulligan from Dimension 20, Luna Tieu, Demi Adejuyigbe, and Jacquelyn Landgraf. With creators Joseph Fink and Jeffrey Cranor returning to write and direct, season two promises to expand on its predecessor while setting the stage for a confirmed Season 3.

Quinn Appreciates the Innovative Spirit of Night Vale Presents

“…I Just Couldn’t Believe When They Asked Me.”

Welcome to Night Vale podcast of purple town background

ScreenRant: Before our conversation, I hadn’t dived into Unlicensed, but I’m now completely hooked! It’s an intriguing series balanced with humor. You’ve had experience with Night Vale before. What keeps you returning to collaborate with them?

Molly C. Quinn: They’re absolutely fantastic! From the moment I met Meg Bashwiner, Joseph Fink, and Jeffrey Cranor at the age of 20, I was drawn to their unique and avant-garde artistic vision. They take creative risks while having genuine fun. It was eye-opening to realize that storytelling doesn’t have to follow a strict formula; it can be expansive and involve personal investment. My enthusiasm led me to persistently reach out to Joseph until they allowed me to participate in one of their LA shows. The opportunity to contribute to a California-based investigative series was irresistible. Their blend of intrigue and humor kept me enthusiastic, and I genuinely hope audiences appreciate Season 2 as much as I enjoyed being part of it.

How much of your character was influenced by your collaboration with the Night Vale team versus their original vision?

Molly C. Quinn: The character development is predominantly driven by the writers. My contributions primarily come from being vocal and engaged in the creative process. Occasionally, elements of my personality are reflected in Molly Hatch, but I discover these nuances primarily through the scripts. It’s almost like the writers have a clearer view of my abilities than I do!

Exciting Progress Update on Season 3

What was your reaction when you learned Season 2 was greenlit, and how did you feel upon reading the first script?

Molly C. Quinn: I was thrilled when Season 2 was announced! Getting the scripts revealed something delightful and unexpected — Molly Hatch enters a budding romance, which explores how a recently divorced, young, sober woman navigates new relationships in a complex world. It’s both entertaining and sweet, revealing genuine struggles and awkwardness along the way, creating an authentic connection. Listening to my own performance in the car with my husband has been amusing and slightly embarrassing! But I find it meaningful and relatable. Season 3 is already in the recording phase, and I can’t wait to dive back into the character and read more scripts!

Quinn Offers Insights for Aspiring Voice Actors

In terms of audio recording, what strategies do you use to deeply immerse yourself in the character?

Molly C. Quinn: A vibrant imagination is essential for this job! I always prepare by reviewing the material, but I leave room for adaptability, as our director Karlyn Daigle is brilliant and brings incredible insights. During recordings, I embrace the collaborative element, working closely with Karlyn, Joseph, Jeffrey, and Meg to ensure our collective vision aligns. I aim to balance familiarity with openness to creative directions so that when I’m in the booth, I fully immerse myself in the world and character, drawing from the fantastic writing that instantly transports me to the scenes.

How does the audio recording experience compare to your work on large blockbuster films?

Molly C. Quinn: Surprisingly, I found the biggest challenge was realizing that scenes on set lack the music cues I’ve always associated with powerful performances. It was a revelation to understand that emotional delivery has to come from within! This lesson proved invaluable, whether I’m in a recording booth or performing in front of a green screen. Blocking out distractions is crucial regardless of the environment, and I continually admire actors who excel at this.

Outside of Unlicensed, I’m thrilled to hear you’ll be collaborating once more with Mike Flanagan in The Life of Chuck. What was it like reuniting with him for this project?

Molly C. Quinn: The moment Mike invited me to join the ensemble, my answer was an immediate yes! This film holds personal significance for him, transforming it from a mere project to a heartfelt work of art. I feel lucky to have had a view of it and am glad audiences are resonating with it as well. It’s an incredibly meaningful experience, transcending the standard film process.

Quinn Has Not Discussed DC Universe Opportunities With James Gunn Yet

Considering your past collaborations, are you interested in joining James Gunn’s DC Universe projects?

Molly C. Quinn: Absolutely! I’m just a nerd living my dream. Every opportunity to immerse myself in the industry excites me. Being part of the DC Universe would be an honor, especially after working with James on Guardians. He’s doing amazing things, and I’m thrilled to witness the fresh performances and creative directions coming from the new projects — especially his show Peacemaker, which is one of my favorites!

Have there been any discussions regarding involvement in the DC Universe as of yet?

Molly C. Quinn: Not yet. Everyone is quite busy right now, but I genuinely appreciate the thought!
