For some time now, speculation surrounding the **Nintendo Switch 2** has been abundant. However, my enthusiasm lies primarily with the idea that **Mario Kart 9** may be launched concurrently with this new console. Currently, there has been no official confirmation about the Switch 2’s existence or even its name, considering Nintendo’s historical naming patterns. Even so, the anticipation of a new Mario Kart title doesn’t seem implausible—whether it debuts at launch or not, the chances of a new installment appear promising.
Since it has been quite some time since the last edition, many believe the gaming community is primed for a fresh chapter in the Mario Kart saga. The release of a new console typically brings the potential for exciting new games, making it an opportune moment for a brand-new Mario Kart release. As a long-standing fan, I find the prospect of a new Mario Kart much more tantalizing than merely the unveiling of new hardware. After all, the excitement surrounding a console is significantly enhanced when the lineup of games is known.
A Decade-Long Wait for a New Mario Kart
Reflecting on Mario Kart 8’s Origins
The **Nintendo Switch** stands out as the first major console from Nintendo since the Super Nintendo that lacked an original Mario Kart game upon its release. Although the Switch did feature **Mario Kart 8 Deluxe** in 2017, this was essentially a rehashed version of the 2014 Wii U title, Mario Kart 8. The decade-long gap since the last new game in the series marks the longest hiatus since Mario Kart’s inception. Moreover, while Mario Kart 8 has continued receiving downloadable content as recently as 2023, the desire for a new series installment is steadily growing.
Mario Kart titles have a history of introducing innovations aligned with their corresponding consoles. For instance, Double Dash!! revolutionized kart mechanics, while Mario Kart DS pioneered online play, and Mario Kart Wii incorporated motion controls. Given that the Switch didn’t release an exclusive Mario Kart game, fans are eager to see the innovative features a Switch 2 could offer for the series. While it’s unfortunate that this generation might miss out, Mario Kart 9 has the potential to unveil groundbreaking additions inspired by the new console’s advancements.
Vast Inspiration for New Mario Kart Courses
Reflecting Nintendo’s Current Era in Course Design
One of my favorite aspects of the Mario Kart series is how **each installment’s courses reflect Nintendo’s trajectory and the state of its gaming universe at that precise moment.** Take for instance the “Peach Beach” track from Mario Kart: Double Dash!!, which perfectly encapsulated the GameCube era, coinciding with the launch of Super Mario Sunshine. Similarly, Mario Kart 8 featured an Animal Crossing course in line with the series’ then-latest game, New Leaf.
Since Mario Kart 8’s initial release, numerous Mario and Nintendo titles have emerged, ripe for inspiration for Mario Kart 9’s tracks. **Super Mario Odyssey** and **Luigi’s Mansion 3** are prime candidates for course design ideas. Furthermore, if Link returns, a new **Hyrule course** inspired by Breath of the Wild or **Tears of the Kingdom** would undoubtedly be a fan favorite. An updated Animal Crossing course is also likely, especially given the massive success of **Animal Crossing: New Horizons.**
Mario Kart Embodies the Spirit of Nintendo Consoles
Enhancing Social Gaming Experiences
The primary draw for a new Nintendo console, in my view, has always centered on the promise of new flagship titles from beloved franchises. While platforms like PlayStation cater to major AAA launches and PCs serve indie gaming needs, Nintendo consoles thrive on the nostalgia and friendly competition they foster. Bringing Mario Kart 9 to the new console would be a powerful incentive for potential buyers.
Though I do relish single-player adventures such as the Zelda series and Mario platformers, I regard Nintendo as the ultimate in social gaming experiences. Titles like Mario Kart and Mario Party lower the entry barrier and create unforgettable moments of friendly rivalry among peers. Without the inclusion of captivating multiplayer options such as these, the allure of a new Nintendo console may not hold the same charm for fans like myself.
The Switch 2 Lacks the Same Spark as Previous Consoles
A Succession to the Switch Doesn’t Ignite the Same Anticipation
While I aim to avoid being overly critical of the Switch 2 concept, the absence of definitive details leaves room for skepticism. If the upcoming console is merely a modest upgrade, then my enthusiasm begins to wane.
Recent leaks suggest a design that closely resembles the existing Switch, with the largest modifications probably revolving around enhanced performance capabilities, which does little to stoke excitement.
Since the debut of the Wii, Nintendo has proven its ability to innovate in the console market. While rivals Xbox and PlayStation frequently offer similar models, Nintendo has consistently introduced unique experiences with each console release. The notion of a Switch 2 that falls into a predictable pattern lacks the creativity I’ve come to associate with Nintendo.
Until Nintendo offers a clearer vision of what to expect from its next console, I remain cautiously optimistic but unexcited. Without significant announcements or trailers showcasing innovative features, general murmurs about a new Switch don’t ignite my enthusiasm.
The prospect of a new console generation itself often highlights the daunting reality of having to invest in new hardware for gaming. In stark contrast, **Mario Kart 9** presents an exhilarating possibility that is much more tangible and exciting. If given the choice, I would invariably opt for the excitement surrounding Mario Kart 9 over an ambiguous Switch 2 announcement any day.
