Mufasa: The Lion King Dominates Box Office Again on New Year’s Day
Mufasa: The Lion King has once again secured the No. 1 spot at the domestic box office, this time over the New Year’s Day holiday. Released a week before Christmas 2024, the film serves as a photorealistic prequel to the acclaimed 2019 iteration of The Lion King. The release coincided with Sonic the Hedgehog 3, which initially garnered significant attention, earning $60.1 million during its three-day opening weekend, substantially overshadowing Mufasa’s debut of $35.4 million.
Despite Sonic’s strong start, Mufasa reclaimed its position at the top of the box office on Christmas Day, continuing this trend through Thursday. This remarkable turn of events highlighted Disney’s enduring popularity, especially during the holiday season.
New Year’s Day Box Office Performance
According to Deadline, Mufasa: The Lion King added an impressive $10.3 million on New Year’s Day, once again besting Sonic the Hedgehog 3, which earned $8.95 million. This marks the sixth time Mufasa has claimed the top position on the domestic chart since its debut on Christmas Day.
Interestingly, the only days Mufasa didn’t top the chart were Friday and Saturday of the last week — giving Sonic the opportunity to seize the No. 1 spot during the traditional three-day weekend.
