My Hero Academia has reached its conclusion with chapter #431, entitled “More.”This epilogue not only wraps up the series but also addresses several fan theories, especially regarding the highly debated romantic relationships among characters. Among these discussions, the relationships of Class 1-A students Kyoka Jiro and Denki Kaminari have been particularly noteworthy. As I followed the buildup to the finale, I couldn’t help but join the speculation surrounding potential couples. Unfortunately, not all desired pairings received a romantic resolution, especially for Jiro and Kaminari.
Throughout the series, romantic elements have remained largely unexplored, with only one official relationship causing considerable debate among fans. Therefore, it was refreshing to see romance play a central role in the final chapter. Kaminari x Jiro has been a beloved pairing in the fan community for quite some time, and while I personally find it adorable, the final chapter decisively put an end to any rumors about a budding romance between the two characters, presenting a clear platonic interaction instead.
One Epilogue Scene Ends Any Speculation About Kaminari and Jiro’s Romance
Horikoshi Confirms Kaminari x Jiro Will Not Be Canon, Much to Fans’ Disappointment
While Jiro and Kaminari did not attain a romantic relationship, a different couple from U.A. High, Shihai Kuroiro and Kinoko Komori, did find love. The pair shyly announced their relationship to their former classmates during a dinner eight years after high school. This confirmation prompted reactions and inquiries regarding Jiro and Kaminari’s relationship status from their peers, with Hanta teasingly speculating about their proximity as heroes. This scenario could have easily led to a romantic turn, yet Horikoshi opted against it.
In response to Hanta’s inquiry, Jiro and Kaminari found the suggestion amusing and immediately denied any romantic connection. Denki elaborated that he was merely seeking a location to establish his hero agency and happened to find an adjacent spot next to Jiro’s; this was purely coincidental. They both emphasized that their relationship is strictly platonic, reflecting a clear friendship rather than a romantic entanglement.
Denki’s Thoughts of Jiro in Stressful Situations Seem to Hint at Romance
Fans Cannot Be Blamed for Their Assumptions, Given the On-Screen Evidence
A part of me felt a pang of disappointment that Jiro and Kaminari’s relationship did not evolve into something canonical. Their dynamic could have blossomed into one of the series’ cutest romances, given the special bond that developed throughout the story. A standout moment occurred during the Gunga Mountain Villain Raid when Denki, during a tense battle, instinctively thought of Jiro upon Midnight’s suggestion to focus on someone important to him.
These subtle hints throughout the series suggested a budding connection between Denki and Kyoka. They frequently teamed up during critical situations, such as the U.S.J. Incident and the Sports Festival, not only because their Quirks are compatible but also due to their choice to work together. Denki’s playful flirtation often led to moments of jealousy or annoyance from Kyoka, where she even employed her Quirk to intervene in his interactions with other girls.
School Festival Moments Further Fueled Speculation of a Kyoka and Denki Romance
Despite the Lack of Canon Romance, Their Friendship Is Evidently Strong
Initially, their bond seemed purely platonic, but in subsequent seasons, this dynamic shifted towards something that fans, including myself, interpreted as more romantic. Denki’s admiring comments on Kyoka’s musical abilities during the School Festival and Endeavor Agency arcs, coupled with a pivotal moment in the Paranormal Liberation War Arc where Denki expressed her importance to him, suggested a deepening connection beyond mere friendship. As the story progressed, Denki became increasingly complimentary, and Kyoka grew more comfortable and open around him.
As the epilogue reveals, while Jiro and Kaminari are currently not a couple, there is potential for their relationship to develop in the future. They share strong teamwork and enjoy spending time together, characterized by a rich history of protecting and entertaining each other throughout their journey. Even if romance never materializes, some fans like myself may be disappointed, yet their friendship is undeniably one of the best in My Hero Academia, built on mutual respect and genuine interest.
Ochaco and Deku’s Love Story Is Just Beginning, Potentially Leaving Room for Denki and Kyoka
Horikoshi Clearly Enjoys Slow-Burn Romances, Paving the Way for Future Developments
Some relationships take longer to develop, and the epilogue highlights this truth with Ochaco and Izuku’s story. Eight years following their initial adventures, they finally confess their feelings, showing flustered excitement and an interest in taking things slow before solidifying their relationship. While many fans might have wished to see this same progression for Kyoka and Denki, perhaps these My Hero Academia pairs simply need more time for a meaningful romance to evolve.
