The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom has validated my long-held theory.
The essence of Zelda isn’t merely adventure or fantasy; it dives deep into the realm of cosmic horror. What unfolds at the conclusion of this game is nothing short of bewildering. Let me break it down.
Straight from the pages of Majora’s playbook…

Majora’s Mask isn’t the sole title in the Zelda franchise to feature a bewildering, chaotic cosmic horror as the ultimate foe. Echoes of Wisdom also ventures into this territory! Throughout their journey, Zelda collaborates with a companion named Tri, battling nightmarish creatures reminiscent of the Titans in Attack on Titan, all in a desperate bid to rescue Link and restore peace to Hyrule. Along their route to the climax, surprise revelations also emerge, such as the intriguing reason behind Link’s silence—though that’s a narrative for another time.
In the final dungeon, known as the Still Ancient Ruins, Link and Zelda join forces, only to confront a nightmarish being from dimensions beyond. This entity is so fearsome that even Majora would be rendered helpless before it. This creature is simply known as Null.
But who or WHAT is Null, exactly?
Null, reminiscent of Majora from previous titles, embodies two defining traits: cunning and insatiable hunger. As Zelda enters the final confrontation, she initially faces The Demon King Ganon himself. This villain appears as the primary antagonist in nearly every installment, embodying the essence of evil itself. Ganon is the reincarnation of Demise, an ancient force of malevolence that Link and Zelda are bound to challenge through eternity. He is the ultimate embodiment of darkness… or is he? After Zelda triumphs over Ganon, the truth unveils; she has merely vanquished an echo of his malevolent presence. But the true orchestrator of chaos still lurks in the shadows: the devious Null, a being longing for destruction from the dawn of time.
Before existence itself was crafted by the three Golden Goddesses, there existed only the endless void—an expanse devoid of meaning, ruled solely by Null, the embodiment of non-existence. Any attempts to manifest anything within this emptiness were devoured by Null before they could take form. It wasn’t until the goddesses descended and sculpted Hyrule that life could flourish, casting Null into the obscurity of the void. Since then, this entity has skillfully manipulated evil, steering reality toward annihilation so the universe can revert to nothingness. Now THAT is truly ominous.
Upon Null’s defeat, Zelda and Link are transported back to the bright expanse of the overworld, where Tri expresses gratitude before ascending into the sky, striking the land like a comet. This magical event heals every crack across the map and restores the inhabitants of Hyrule. However, the only fissure left unhealed is the one in my heart, created when Tri bid farewell to Zelda to return to the realm of the goddesses alongside the other fairies. Subsequently, Zelda finds herself back in Hyrule Castle, reuniting with Link, who generously credits her for their kingdom’s salvation. The story concludes with her gazing up at the sky, offering one last poignant farewell to Tri.
