Netflix Announces Continued Adventures in Tomb Raider
On October 25, coinciding with the 28th anniversary of the original Tomb Raider game’s launch in 1996, it was announced by Netflix that Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft will return for a second season. This announcement came merely two weeks post the series’ premiere, demonstrating the streaming service’s confidence in the show.
Alongside the announcement, a teaser image from Season 2 surfaced, confirming that Lara’s best friend Sam Nishimura will be a prominent figure this season. Although Sam had been missing from the previous two Tomb Raider games and only made a brief flashback appearance in Season 1, her anticipated return was hinted at in the season’s finale where Lara left Jonah’s wedding early to investigate her friend’s apartment after receiving a worried call. Upon her arrival, Lara found the place in disarray and discovered that Sam had been looking into a crime syndicate led by a character named Vladimir.
Along with the announcement, the synopsis for Season 2 of Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft has been revealed. It indicates that this season will focus on Lara teaming up with Sam to track down several stolen African Orisha masks. The synopsis suggests that a mysterious billionaire may be the antagonist and that the Orisha masks could be tied to a powerful, possibly divine force:
“When adventurer Lara Croft uncovers a series of stolen African Orisha masks, she partners with her best friend Sam to retrieve these invaluable artifacts. Lara’s exhilarating journey takes her worldwide as she explores the concealed secrets of Orisha history, evades the schemes of a dangerous and elusive billionaire who seeks the masks for her own motives, and unveils dark mysteries and a power that transcends explanation. A power that could very well be divine.”
The thrilling news regarding the renewal of Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft, combined with the confirmation of Sam’s enhanced role in Season 2, brings hope that Karen Fukuhara, known for her role in The Boys, will reprise her voice role for Sam. In Season 1, Fukuhara’s dialogue was limited, but it is anticipated that the upcoming season will offer her a more substantial character arc, allowing for exploration of the relationship dynamics between Lara and Sam following the events of the last game. Hayley Atwell has also expressed her eagerness to once again voice Lara Croft and has shown interest in portraying the character across different platforms beyond the Netflix series.
