After more than two decades, one of the most iconic horror franchises is set to continue with a new film. Now, fresh plot details are emerging.
Recent updates reveal that production has not only wrapped for 28 Years Later, but also for its direct sequel. While there are no specifics on when filming for the third movie will commence, progress is clearly underway.
Exciting Developments Around 28 Years Later
Ralph Fiennes, a lead actor in 28 Years Later, recently shared insights with Indiewire about the current state of the film series. He confirmed that production has wrapped on both the upcoming films and unveiled key plot elements.
According to Fiennes, the upcoming narrative will unfold in a Britain plagued by the rage virus for 28 years, leading to a scenario where the infected have dominated the landscape. Similar to the events in the original 28 Days Later, there remain small enclaves of unaffected individuals hiding from the infected. The plot focuses on a young boy seeking a doctor to aid his sick mother, requiring him to traverse the picturesque yet perilous English countryside, rife with infected individuals lurking in the terrain.
Additionally, Fiennes revealed another intriguing aspect of the storyline: during the boy’s quest, he ultimately encounters an eccentric doctor who reluctantly agrees to help his mother—a character described by Fiennes as “odd yet ultimately benevolent.”
This premise raises several interesting questions, particularly relating to how the rage virus, which originally depleted its hosts in mere weeks due to starvation, has managed to persist in the population for so long. A plausible theory suggests that the virus may have evolved, granting the infected a newfound cognitive ability that enables them to seek food and water, or they could resemble traditional zombies whose survival is independent of sustenance. Audiences can look forward to uncovering these answers when Fiennes teams up with fellow stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Jack O’Connell, Erin Kellyman, and the returning Cillian Murphy, who is rumored to make a cameo at the very least, if not a more substantial role, on June 30, 2025.
