Attention! This article contains SPOILERS for episodes 1 and 2 of Skeleton Crew.
The intrigue surrounding Jude Law’s character, Jod Na Nawood, in Star Wars: Skeleton Crew is profound, yet it may serve as a decoy for a deeper mystery involving the show’s true antagonist. Although the narrative primarily highlights the adventures of its four young heroes—Wim, Neel, Fern, and KB—the introduction of various adult characters enriches the storyline. Notably, Jod appears to possess connections to the Force, suggesting a complex layer to his character.
The promotional material for Skeleton Crew has shrouded Jod’s identity in mystery, but this heightened attention could be diverting fans from a pivotal revelation. In addition to Jod, we also meet significant adult figures during the first two episodes, including Wim’s father, Wendle, and Fern’s mother, Fara. The latter’s position as the Undersecretary to the Supervisor suggests her involvement in higher-stakes political dynamics, a rare title in the Star Wars universe.
Fern’s Mother’s Fascinating Connections to a New Republic Era Villain
Not the Only “Fara”
Alexander Freed’s Star Wars: Alphabet Squadron trilogy introduces Fara Yadeez in the novel Shadow Fall. Fara served as an aide to an Imperial Undersecretary and remained faithful to the Empire even after its collapse. She played a significant role in a rebellion against the New Republic, temporarily allowing Imperial loyalists to control Troithe. Ultimately, Fara was arrested by General Hera Syndulla, a cautionary tale for the New Republic’s leadership.
Crazy #SkeletonCrew Fact: The only other ‘Undersecretary’ in canon is coincidentally also called Fara and is seen in 2020’s Alphabet Squadron: Shadow’s Fall. She was a loyalist to the Empire and later, a Remnant. She was arrested by Hera Syndulla and the New Republic. pic.twitter.com/e2tLwBL7Wo — Star Wars Meg (@StarWarsMeg1) December 5, 2024
As highlighted by Star Wars Meg, there are striking similarities between Fara Yadeez and Fern’s mother, Fara. Both female characters in Star Wars are linked to the title “Undersecretary”and share an apparent thirst for power. With the series progressing, viewers are eager to learn more about Fern’s mother and her role in the unfolding events.
Political Figures as the Main Antagonists of the New Republic Era
Senators & Other Influential Politicians
In the timeline of the New Republic era, we often see that the most formidable villains are those in positions of political power. This theme is especially prominent between the collapse of the Empire and the emergence of the First Order, as examined in Claudia Gray’s novel Bloodline. These political figures effectively laid the groundwork for the First Order’s ascent, discreetly fueling its growth while evading public scrutiny.
Both The Mandalorian and its related series have illustrated this trend, with antagonists such as Moff Gideon and various senators in Ahsoka. While Gideon is heavily militarized, having secretly amassed an army on Mandalore, the senators portrayed in Ahsoka exemplify how political influence can enable the rise of a tyrannical regime, particularly through the character of Senator Xiono. The conflicts in this era do not revolve around sinister Sith lords or wartime generals but rather those wielding influence from the shadows.
Could Fern’s Mother Mirror Fara Yadeez From the Alphabet Squadron?
An Undersecretary With Ambitious Aspirations
While notable differences exist between Fara in Skeleton Crew and Fara Yadeez from the Alphabet Squadron trilogy—particularly in their appearances and backstories—it’s possible the show draws on elements of Yadeez’s character for inspiration. This would reflect the adaptation process similar to Cobb Vanth’s character in The Mandalorian, based on Chuck Wendig’s Aftermath trilogy. Fara’s live-action portrayal may echo Yadeez’s dedication to her political allegiances, with both characters concealing details about their origins to further their ambitions.
