The masterminds behind Cobra Kai have also made waves in the realm of time-travel cinema, with recent developments in a franchise that fans may find intriguing. Co-creators Josh Heald, Jon Hurwitz, and Hayden Schlossberg have brought to life this popular series, which serves as a spinoff of the classic film, The Karate Kid. Set years later, it follows the rekindled rivalry between Daniel LaRusso and Johnny Lawrence. With five successful seasons already streamed on Netflix, anticipation builds for the concluding third segment of season six, set for release next year.

Though Cobra Kai is a highlight of their collaborative careers, the trio has ventured into various projects beyond the dojo. Their most recent venture, a comedic series titled Obliterated, was unfortunately cut short by Netflix after just one season. Heald’s previous work includes the 2011 film Mardi Gras: Spring Break, which contributed to his growing resume, but now it appears that one of their earlier screenplays is poised for a new streaming opportunity.

Mark your calendars! Both entries in the Hot Tub Time Machine series are set to arrive on Max. The original film, which debuted almost 15 years ago in 2010, follows a group of friends whose vacation at a ski resort takes an unexpected twist when they discover their hot tub acts as a malfunctioning time machine, sending them back to 1986. Their misadventures led to the creation of a sequel, Hot Tub Time Machine 2, released in 2015, with Heald contributing as a screenwriter for both films.

The cast of the Hot Tub Time Machine films includes comedic talents like Rob Corddry, Clark Duke, Craig Robinson, and Adam Scott, all of whom deliver memorable performances.

Fans of the series will be delighted to know that both films will be available for streaming on Max starting January 1, 2025. This New Year’s Day release provides an excellent opportunity for enthusiasts of outlandish comedies and time travel narratives to enjoy the films back-to-back as they usher in the new year.

Although neither Hot Tub Time Machine film has garnered overwhelming critical acclaim, they present a humorous spin on the time travel genre, which often leans heavily toward serious science fiction. The timing of the sequel’s arrival on Max is particularly fitting; its narrative plunges the characters—and the audience—ten years into the future, setting the majority of Hot Tub Time Machine 2 in the year 2025. This makes the film a great choice for New Year’s viewing, allowing viewers to compare its 2015 depiction of the future with our actual 2025 reality.
