Fumito Ueda, the visionary behind the acclaimed Shadow of the Colossus, offered the world a first glimpse of his latest sci-fi project during The Game Awards 2024. Despite being untitled, the game evokes a similar sense of isolation found in Ueda’s earlier masterpieces.
Renowned for his work with Team Ico and Sony’s Japan Studio, Ueda has built a legacy with games such as Ico and Shadow of the Colossus, both of which are celebrated cornerstones of the PlayStation 2 era. After departing from Team Ico in 2011, he continued on a contract to complete The Last Guardian, which was met with high expectations before its release in 2016. Following this, his studio, GenDesign, hinted at a new title but kept details under wraps with intriguing teasers—until now, when fans finally caught a glimpse at The Game Awards 2024.
Prior to the unveiling, Geoff Keighley emphasized that the trailer consisted entirely of gameplay footage. It opens with a character shrouded in a cloak and mask racing through a desolate gray world, while a 60-second countdown ticks away. The character swiftly makes their way to a looming mechanized platform, leaping high into the air. Viewers can notice gameplay that draws heavily from the climbing mechanics pivotal to Shadow of the Colossus, as the protagonist scales an enormous mecha.

The gameplay intensifies as the countdown reaches zero, prompting the character to enter a mecha for protection against an impending shockwave. Just as the robot’s head becomes operational, a blinding white light engulfs the area, followed by an explosive scene where the mecha’s head is obliterated. While hints of Ueda’s previous works are visible throughout the trailer, it’s too soon to ascertain how closely this upcoming title will align with the themes of Shadow of the Colossus.
While The Last Guardian experienced delays during its development phase, it appears GenDesign’s forthcoming project is proceeding smoothly without any reported setbacks. However, fans should note that no official title or release date has been disclosed yet. Regardless, the gaming community is buzzing with excitement for what GenDesign has in store, especially after years of subtle teasers and anticipation.
