Nicki Minaj has recently unfollowed Sean “Diddy”Combs on Instagram following his arrest on serious charges, including sex trafficking, racketeering conspiracy, and facilitating prostitution. After his arrest on September 16, Combs was denied bail twice and is currently awaiting trial at the Metropolitan Detention Center.
Minaj’s decision to unfollow Combs on Instagram shocked many users online. The situation sparked discussions about irony, especially in light of her husband Kenneth Petty’s background as a convicted sex offender, who was incarcerated for the first-degree attempted rape of a 16-year-old girl in 1995.
“Unfollowed Diddy, but she’s still married to Kenneth Petty, btw,”one user remarked.
Many users echoed this sentiment, highlighting what they perceived as hypocrisy in Minaj’s distancing from Combs while remaining in a relationship with Petty.
“But she has a Diddy in her own home,”one person tweeted.
“Yet she’s living and married to someone like Diddy, lmao,”another person added.
“Took her years,”someone else said.
“Why did she even follow him in the first place?”a netizen questioned.
In contrast, some defended Minaj, asking critics to stop targeting her.
“At least she has some morals left, tens for Nicki on this one,”one individual commented.
“Maybe it took her long because she’s on tour right now and not constantly on IG?”another user suggested.
“So you all criticize Nicki for following Diddy… and now that she unfollows him, you’re bringing up her marriage to Kenneth? Pick a struggle,”someone else tweeted.
Nicki Minaj’s Previous Management Relationship with Diddy
Nicki Minaj was once signed to Diddy’s management team until May 2011, after which she joined Hip Hop Since 1978 (HHS78), the same team representing Lil Wayne and Drake. In a 2010 Hot 97 interview, Combs clarified that his relationship with Minaj was not a conventional manager-artist dynamic.
“With the Nicki thing, it was something me and her made sure we didn’t define or kept a mystery. So I don’t go around saying I’m her manager. We work together in an unofficial capacity,”he explained.
In 2010, Minaj was invited to perform as Diddy’s son Justin’s unofficial date for his Sweet 16 party. During an Instagram Live in 2023, she reminisced about arriving late to the event, which annoyed Combs and Justin’s mother, Misa.
“What was that like, me being your Sweet 16 date? I know I was mad late. I could feel Puffy and Misa were so mad at me; I was so upset with myself because I hated every dress I tried on that day,” she recalled.
The Barbie World rapper expressed feeling “horrible”about her tardiness and questioned why Justin chose her instead of inviting his girlfriend.
Diddy Denied Bail as a “Serious Flight Risk”
Meanwhile, Sean Combs was denied bail twice after his September 16 arrest. A bail bond request of $50 million was rejected after prosecutors labeled him a “serious flight risk”and a potential threat to victims if released.
A 14-page indictment detailing Combs’ alleged crimes was unsealed, including references to events he hosted referred to as “freak offs.”These court documents painted a disturbing picture of orchestrated sexual acts where women were allegedly coerced and drugged into engaging with male escorts.
The indictment claims that Combs and his associates used intimidation and threats against victims and witnesses to silence them.
“When employees or witnesses to his abuse threatened Combs’ authority, he and members of [Combs] Enterprises resorted to violence, threats, and verbal abuse to maintain silence,” the documents read.
Authorities found evidence of the “freak offs,”alongside narcotics and roughly 1,000 bottles of baby oil and lubricant during a raid on Combs’ Los Angeles and Miami mansions in March 2024.
As of the time of this article, Combs’ sex trafficking case is ongoing, with the next hearing set for September 24, 2024.
