Nier: Automata Achieves Impressive New Sales Milestone

Overview of Nier: Automata’s Sales Success

  • Nier: Automata has surpassed nine million copies sold worldwide since its 2017 launch.
  • In the past ten months alone, the RPG has contributed one million sales to this total.
  • Though fans eagerly anticipate a potential third Nier installment, no official announcements have been made about the series’ future.

In a recent announcement, Square Enix revealed that Nier: Automata has achieved a significant milestone, with over nine million copies sold globally. Since its debut in early 2017, the game has been celebrated for its distinctive universe, gripping characters, and memorable music, earning it a devoted fan base.

As a sequel to the 2010 game Nier and a spin-off from the Drakengard series, Nier: Automata was met with overwhelming praise upon its release. In just two months, it sold more than 1.5 million copies and went on to secure various year-end accolades, particularly recognizing its exceptional audio and design elements. Even years later, the game continues to impact the gaming community, as evidenced by a recent crossover with Stellar Blade, which highlights the enduring popularity of this action RPG. According to the publisher, interest in the title remains strong and sales figures reflect this trend.

With the game officially recording over nine million shipments worldwide—encompassing both digital and physical sales—it is noteworthy that in February 2024, the sales figure stood at eight million. This indicates a remarkable increase of one million units sold in merely ten months. The ongoing interest is further illustrated by the January 2023 premiere of the Nier: Automata anime series and an innovative themed dinner show that took place in Tokyo on December 29, 2023.

Nier: Automata’s Remarkable Sales Achievement

Recent discussions about the future of the Nier franchise have sparked fan speculation, especially following hints from director Yoko Taro about a new project that surfaced in May 2024. Nonetheless, there were concerns after reports emerged in December that some key developers had departed from PlatinumGames. This uncertainty has led many fans to worry about the trajectory of upcoming titles. Despite the absence of official confirmations, the immense popularity of Nier: Automata and its characters’ ongoing appearances in various games suggest that the likelihood of a third installment remains high.

In April 2024, following the launch of Stellar Blade, Yoko Taro shared his thoughts with IGN Japan, stating that the graphics and overall appeal of Stellar Blade surpassed those of Nier: Automata. Kim Hyung Tae, the director of Stellar Blade, graciously deflected the compliment, acknowledging that his game “couldn’t compete.”Although the prospect of a new entry in the Nier series seems plausible, it’s clear that Taro’s creative portfolio is diverse, as shown by his recent Voice of Cards trilogy, which showcased his willingness to explore different gaming concepts.
