The year 2025 is set to be a significant milestone in the gaming industry, particularly with the anticipated arrival of the next-generation Nintendo Switch console, informally dubbed the Switch 2. This successor has been a hot topic among gaming enthusiasts, fueled by persistent leaks and speculation. Initially rumored for a 2024 launch, reports suggest that the release has been delayed until 2025 for reasons that remain unclear. While these claims lack official confirmation, they might explain the scarcity of first-party offerings from Nintendo in 2024. Regardless, 2025 is poised to finally unveil the Switch 2 to eager fans.
Anticipation is building around the potential exclusives that may accompany the Switch 2 at launch. There are whispers of a new 3D Mario title, which would be a logical step considering it has been nearly a decade since the release of Super Mario Odyssey. Other rumored games include a fresh Donkey Kong adventure, a remaster of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, and potentially a sequel to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. While these prospects are exciting, a sequel to the previously underappreciated fighting game Arms could elevate the Switch 2’s launch experience even more.
Why Arms 2 Would Be an Ideal Launch Title for the Switch 2
Arms: An Early Success with Limited Longevity
Despite its current low profile, Arms stands out as one of the few new AAA intellectual properties created by Nintendo during the current console generation. Developed by Nintendo EPD in collaboration with Bandai Namco Studios, the game debuted on the Nintendo Switch in June 2017, shortly after the system’s launch. In Arms, up to four players engage in combat within an arena, using extendable arms to battle opponents. Unlike traditional fighting games, the action is presented from a behind-the-shoulder view, offering a unique gameplay experience.
Upon its release, Arms sold over 2 million copies, a respectable figure yet not reflective of its potential compared to other franchises. The game’s decline in popularity can largely be attributed to insufficient post-launch support. Although Nintendo provided some downloadable content and updates in 2017, support dwindled significantly less than a year after launch.
The swift withdrawal of support for Arms seemed unexpected, especially given its initial promise. While it was far from perfect, the game had a solid foundation that could have been expanded with additional features over time.
