No Man’s Sky Guide: Finding and Clearing Derelict Freighters

No Man’s Sky Guide: Finding and Clearing Derelict Freighters

In the vast reaches of No Man’s Sky, players can discover a variety of intriguing remnants, including abandoned ships from previous space travelers. These derelict freighters serve as abandoned capital ships, ripe for exploration, offering valuable loot and narratives about their troubled pasts.

This comprehensive guide will equip you with the knowledge needed to find and explore these derelict freighters effectively.

Locating Derelict Freighters in No Man’s Sky

While abandoned freighters can sometimes be spotted randomly as you travel through space, these vessels typically offer minimal loot and are not available for boarding. To find a derelict freighter that you can explore in detail, you will need an Emergency Signal Scanner.

You can acquire the Emergency Signal Scanner from these vendors:

  • Iteration: Helios on the Anomaly – Provides one scanner free of charge every week.
  • Scrap Dealer on a Space Station – Sells the scanner for five million Units, with increasing prices for subsequent purchases.

After securing your Emergency Signal Scanner, venture into open space and activate it from your inventory. Engage your Pulse Drive to search for an abandoned freighter. When your scanner detects a freighter, exit the Pulse Drive to begin the Lost in Space mission.

Having cold-resistance upgrades for your exosuit will significantly enhance your ability to explore derelict freighters, though they are not strictly necessary.

Exploring Derelict Freighters in No Man’s Sky

To effectively clear derelict freighters in No Man’s Sky, it is essential to explore the randomly configured rooms thoroughly, gather ship logs, and loot everything in sight! The first step is to land your ship.

Each freighter, regardless of its size or type, will feature a landing pad. Look for a landing pad situated near the ship’s bridge, identifiable by a blue circle indicating a landing spot. Once you land, exit your ship and search for the entrance to the freighter.

Be mindful that the game does not save your progress while you are aboard a derelict freighter. If you exit the game during your exploration, both the freighter and your Emergency Signal Scanner will vanish.

Upon entering the derelict freighter, you must clear various rooms and, if applicable, defeat any foes residing within. Use your Scanner to locate loot, and your Analysis Visor to identify interactable objects, including explosive canisters and locked doors.

Collecting Ship Logs

As you navigate through the freighter, you will encounter ship logs that narrate the crew’s tale. Your mission includes additional objectives, such as recovering the Crew Manifest, the Captain’s Log, and salvaging the Engineering Unit.

Here’s a breakdown of your objectives and how to achieve them:

  • Crew Manifest: Locate the Records Terminal (green terminal) and interact with it.
  • Captain’s Log: Acquired from the Security Mainframe (orange terminal). Interact with it, choose any fate for the captain, and then use security credentials to collect the log. Security credentials can be randomly obtained from logs found throughout the freighter.
  • Engineering Unit: Find the Engineering Control (red terminal). Interact and select your desired reward, which may include a Salvaged Fleet Unit (Technology Upgrade), Cargo Bulkhead (Freighter Bulkhead), or Nanites.

The terminals generally appear in a predictable order, but you can complete tasks in any sequence. Each terminal is also equipped with a teleporter allowing you to return to earlier terminals or the emergency airlock where you entered the freighter.

Rewards from Derelict Freighters in No Man’s Sky

Derelict freighters are treasure troves of valuable items. The primary rewards from these missions include Tainted Metal, as well as the Crew’s Manifest and Captain’s Log, in addition to your selected reward from the Engineering Control. Upon completing your exploration, make your way to the nearest Space Station where you can sell the Crew Manifest and the Captain’s Log to the Scrap Dealer for Tainted Metal or donate them to the Guild Envoy for reputation points.

Tainted Metal is a unique currency that can be exchanged with the Scrap Dealer for various rewards, including cosmetic upgrades, base decorations, and three different types of Suspicious Packets. Be aware that Suspicious Packet (Tech) and Suspicious Packet (Arms) contain black-marketed upgrades for your exosuit and Multi-Tool, respectively, though these upgrades may often come with subpar stats and may not justify their cost.

If you seek even more clandestine upgrades, consider waiting for a landed pilot on a planet who sells illegal upgrades for Nanites or seek out a Pirate-controlled system directly.
